when do decisions on offering arbitration have to be made?  my guess is they try to resign Taylor for a pay cut or else they may decline arbitration.  Stevenson I think is penciled in for the roster as the lefty OF PH / 4th OF now.
Isn't Taylor out of options?

Glad he's not going to a rival. It does mean Sanchez needs to ID a new Stras-hug conspirator.
How about Adrian Sanchez?  It'll be a Sanchez sandwich.

If they do not settle before the date to offer arbitration, I think the Nats decline arbitration and let him walk.  I don't see them paying the $3MM minimum he gets in arbitration for a 4th OF when they have Stevenson and can sign a cheap vet.

I hope we jump on Greg Bird if his medicals are not ridiculously bad. We know Rizzo likes him.

Nontender candidates for each team: https://www.baseballtradevalues.com/non-tender-candidates-for-each-team/

Quote
Nationals
We’ve included Gomes here only because we think his contract option should not be picked up, and Taylor isn’t worth his salary either.
Wilmer Difo, UTIL
Roenis Elias, LHRP
Sam Freeman, LHRP (released 11/7/19)
Yan Gomes, C* (Option declined 11/2/19)
Javy Guerra, RHRP
Adrian Sanchez, UTIL
Hunter Strickland, RHRP
Michael A. Taylor, OF

I don't think they non-tender Difo and Sanchez.

However, if we could trade Taylor and non-tender Strickland, that's five million that could be put to a decent reliever.

Adrian Sanchez isn't arb eligible per MLBTR and Cot's, so I can't see why they would non-tender him.  Difo, OTOH, is due $1.2MM per MLBTR's estimate, which he's not worth.  Taylor at $3.25MM is too much.

I could see keeping Difo this time around if Sanchez is your alternative. Though I think Jake Noll might be better than both.

Taylor needs to start. I don't think he's as bad as he was this past season, but he needs every day time.

With the Indians looking to move Naquin to RF, I'd like to package Taylor and a prospect for one of their decent relievers. Or if they are truly interested in trading Lindor, using Taylor in a package as part of a three team trade.

Before everyone jumps on you, I take it you mean we would not end up with Lindor and that what you are saying is we kick Taylor to the Indians  and get something from a 3d team that gets Lindor.

Maybe. If we lose Rendon, I wouldn't be opposed to getting Lindor and moving Turner to second. Obviously, Taylor would be part of a package centered around Kieboom. But if you got Lindor at SS and Turner at second, you could live with sub-par offense at third, and would leave money left over for catching, first base, and maybe a bullpen arm.

another look at players on our roster who are out of options but aren't cemented in as 25-man members for next year:

Summary of what I think eventually happens to all 10 guys in one (or two) words:

Guerra, Javy: DFA’d
Strickland, Hunter: 2020 bullpen
Taylor, Michael: Non-tendered
Elias, Roenis: 2020 bullpen
Ross, Joe: DFA’d
Difo, Wilmer: 2020 bench
Fedde, Erick: 2020 bullpen
Sanchez, Adrian DFA’d
Voth, Austin: 5th starter
Read, Raudy; DFA’d

Love NFA but Todd is crazy if he thinks Rizzo is going to DFA Joe Ross.

Rizzo can't keep Voth, Fedde and Ross without putting at least two of them into the pen (assuming we keep Strasburg).  Seems they are decent trade bait right now.  If we don't keep Strasburg, then figure Ross is our #4 and Voth is our #5.

He'll probably keep all three.

Fedde needs to become an actual reliever. He isn't starting material at this point.

Ross and Voth are needed. Stras and Max both have IL stints in the last two seasons and that's likely not going to get better with age.

Rizzo is getting an extra roster spot, so he can put all three of them on the roster.

I just think the Nats love Ross too much and have invested too much into his development to let him go for nothing. Same could be said for Fedde I suppose but there's a reason Ross was on the WS roster (and made an emergency start) and Fedde and Voth were left off.

how they use the 26th man will be interesting, I can't see them stashing a 6th starter.  I'd figure it would be used for a utility-type player, or a third catcher to provide more flexibility for pinch-hitting for the catcher.

Why? Regardless of what his medicals say about him this week, he'll be broken by April, and he sucks when he does play.  Next year is 2020.  The last time he hit over .200 in the majors was 2015.  He's 27 and has a .725 career OPS as a first baseman.  Over the last four seasons, he's played the equivalent of one, during which he has an OBP of .287 and -0.8 WAR.  What about this suggests that he is potentially useful going forward?

Bird is done. He hasn't been the same since he hurt his shoulder. He doesn't hit the ball hard anymore.

If we're platooning at first base, the best options are going to be Mitch Moreland or Eric Thames. But I think the Nats could go a long way if the re-sign Rendon, and flip Kieboom for a long term answer at first base (or a corner outfield spot).

Bird is a guy that I would take on a minor-league deal to show me something in spring training but not someone I would guarantee anything to. He will get a shot with a bad team that can give him some cash because he's got upside. I doubt we could get him on a minors deal but we are one of the few contending teams that has a wide open spot at 1B, even with Zimm likely returning.

With the White Sox signing Grandal, they may now dangle James McCann, who is signed for 4.9 million in 2020.  We already have hooked up with them before for a big trade.  McCann would be a good and afforsable partner for Suzuki.

As a camp guy yes. Maybe his injury woes are over.
