Pass. Would honestly rather trade Scherzer, pay a crap ton for Cole, and reload in 2021 with Mookir
At the July deadline we wanted to trade Scherzer, Rendon, and anyone else who had value.  Of course we're happy to be wrong about that.  Trading Max now is not even a possibility.

Yea, I'd want Mancini and Givens. Garcia, Denaburg/Crowe, and Canning/Sharpe/Augustin should be a fair trade, anomicities between clubs not withstanding.

That isn't a bad deal. Mancini grades out as a good 1B. Zim comes back off the bench for much less.

That is a nice way to bring in fixes at 1B and RP and still have money left over to pay for Rendon/Stras. Re-sign Gomes and either play Kieboom at 2B or sign AssCab. That wouldn't be a terrible offseason.

Gotta do this deal after you re-sign Rendon. Otherwise, I'd want to look at Castellanos at first base (especially if he will take 14-15 MM AAV)

Dougherty reports the Nats have yet to talk to Zimm’s agent

Article is behind a paywall but in reality, do they have to?

Zim is going to play here or retire. The Nats are going to make their moves and then come to Zim with their wiggle room and see what he thinks. That’s just my opinion.

As of Tuesday.

Quote
Zimmerman was bound for free agency considering his $18 million club option for 2020. The Nationals declined it, as expected, but remain interested in keeping Zimmerman on a cheap, short-term deal. The Nationals had not yet met with Zimmerman or his representation when Rizzo spoke with reporters Tuesday.

Zimmerman was at Walter Reed a couple days ago with Mark Lerner and the trophy. They're not going to stiff Zimmerman.

You mean they won’t flim-flam the Z-man?

I agree.  They have to re- sign Rendon and Stras and see what money is left for Zim, Cabrerra , Gomes and most critically the bullpen additions.

At this point in his career, I'm sure he expects to be "stiffed." No way they should pay him more than his on-field value.

Someone suggested in the Zim thread that he should be paid 5 mil with the 2 mil buyout included in that amount. I agree and there should be no conversation for 2021 if he can't play in a minimum of 100 games including pinch hitting appearences this season.

Zim isn't going to get stiffed. He's going to be here next year, at a minimum.

He's already had the "sentimentality (overpaying) contract." This negotiation should be all about business.

You sure about that?  Hindsight is nice, but when the extension was signed (February 2012), he was a 27-year-old 3B who had hit .296/.370/.869 over the past three seasons while making an all-star game, winning two Silver Sluggers and a Gold Glove, and getting MVP votes twice.

For comparison, Rendon at the same age was coming off a three-season period of .280/.368/.829 and had missed more games due to injury in those three seasons.  In other words, at age 27, very similar players.  Wouldn't you have liked the Nats to have signed Rendon to a 6-year extension two years ago?  Obviously things diverged from there, but let's not try to revise history.

Yep. This contract is the sentimental contract.

Guess we're about to see how much sentiment is worth. I called the last contract sentimental due to the post-retirement clauses. What you give a team "icon" who you believe will start/finish his career with one team.

Since 2014, he has averaged 92 games a year, .263 BA with 15 home runs and 57 runs batted in, during which he was paid handsomely. (The 2017 return to previous form significantly helped the overall averages.) His return and performance is encouraging, but what GM would lead with committing dollars with two marquee free agents out there, especially when both sides clearly appear to have mutual respect? That the Post can find this worthy of specification shows the nature of the free agency rumor mill with anything out there prone to be spun as noteworthy or indicative of something whether it is or not.

I read it as something much more encouraging: it's the middle of November, and the Post has to fill column inches.  Yet, in the middle of the season for the other 3 major professional sports, they're filling it with Nats non-news.  Gone, hopefully forever, are the days where summer sports pages were dominated by discussion of which long snapper might be the backup for the Redskins' pre-season, or of the human interest story of Rex Grossman's barber.   For me, that's something worth a toast.
