I don't hate this rule in theory. I am sure I will in practice.

I hate it all together.  Just speed up the transition.

You're a dummy if you thought Boras was going to let that happen.

Boras doesn't dictate anything.  He's makes recommendations.

Stras is one year older now than when Max signed his contract.  Six years at $180mm should easily get it done.

Lol, Boras definitely does.

Stras is the same age as Grienke when Grienk got his deal. Why on Earth should he take anything less?

Predict when you think the contract announcements will happen

Strasburg....

1- soon, almost immediately
2- after the winter meetings
3- when pitchers and catchers report

Rendon
1- soon, almost immediately
2-after winter meetings
3-end of February
4- mid spring training

Cole
1-soon, almost immediately
2-after winter meetings
3- he will be the last of the Boras bunch

Stras - 1
Boras will use Strasburg to set the market.

Rendon and Cole - 3

Was thinking with 26 man roster do you think that maybe we keep a 3rd Catcher?

Also would maybe kick the tires on Wilmer Flores if we lose Rendon. Guy kills LHP. Maybe we could find a platoon partner for him.

I like this list ..

2. Anthony Rendon (3B, Age 29): He might have made more money for himself with postseason excellence since Carlos Beltran tantalized the Mets while in an Astros uniform 15 years ago. Prediction: Washington Nationals, seven years, $232 million.

3. Stephen Strasburg (RHP, Age: 31): He might have made more money for himself with postseason excellence…yeah, the Nats’ elite players really were something in October, weren’t they? Prediction:Washington Nationals, six years, $182 million.

20. Will Smith (LHP, Age: 30): When Aroldis Chapman stayed with the Yankees, it made Smith the top closer available. Prediction: Washington Nationals, three years, $40 million.

29. Howie Kendrick (IF, Age: 36): The postseason hero showed that he has plenty left in his 36-year-old tank. Prediction: Washington Nationals, one year, $6 million.

https://nypost.com/2019/11/04/ranking-mlbs-top-30-free-agents-and-predicting-where-theyll-sign/
More I look at this, the more I really don't want to pay that much for Kendrick and Smith with better options on the table.

Fangraphs did their own with expert picks and crowd source: https://blogs.fangraphs.com/2020-top-50-free-agents/

They have Castellanos at 14 million over 4 years. Castellanos will be 28 next season. A four year deal, even if it had an opt out after season 2, is pretty much ideal for this team. 14 million a year seems like a pretty damn good deal for a 120+ wRC+/.850+ OPS bat. In the past, Castellanos has said he is willing to play first base. If he is still wiling at 14 million AAV, then that's a really good deal. Even at 18 million, it's a good deal. His poor fielding is minimalized at first base (and we have a defensive replacement available with Zimmerman). You could even use him to spell Soto and Eaton once in a while.

This would still give you money to bring back Yan Gomes to catch for a couple years. I can live with Difo or Keiboom at second base if it means steady production from first base and good catching. Not sure if we would still have money for a bullpen arm, but I would take a decent middle reliever over Smith, simply so we can capitalize on Doolittle's cheapness and fragility by using him as the closer and improving the pen. Hudson, Drew Pomeranz, or Chris Martin would all be good choices for middle relief and should be around 5-7 million AAV.

I think we all love what Howie did. And maybe he can do it again. But he's 36 and didn't seem like he could play every day. With Zimmerman moving to the bench, the role of primary pinch hitter would go to him.

But a lineup like this is really good (on paper):
Eaton/Turner
Turner/Eaton
Rendon
Soto
Castellanos
Keiboom
Robles
Gomes/Suzuki

The important thing to remember is this isn't fantasy baseball where you use spreadsheets and forumulas solely to put together a new 2020 roster.  No, you don't bring every single guy back simply for comradere in the clubhouse, but maintaining the same team chemistry is very, very important.  This team won a World Series partly due to talent, and a big part because they believed in each other and picked each other up and had fun playing with their brothers.  Anybody you let leave, you have to replace more than just the back of their baseball card (or their Fangraphs page for today).  Anybody that comes in, they have to fit in the way Parra did, the way Dozier did, etc.

From MLBTR:

On the heels of an outstanding bounceback campaign, veteran utilityman Howie Kendrick seems to be a popular early target. Britt Ghiroli of The Athletic reports on Twitter that at least a pair of teams are already showing interest.

The Rays and Marlins are two of the clubs knocking on the door at the outset of the open-market season, per Ghiroli, who indicates there are others as well. It’s not hard to imagine why — though for different reasons with respect to each team.

Kendrick turned in a .344/.395/.572 regular season showing over 370 plate appearances before coming up with two enormously important postseason home runs. He also hit the ball harder than just about anyone in baseball during the 2019 and remains capable of spending at least some time at second base and the corner outfield. He’s a part-time guy, but a pretty darn good one.

For the Rays, Kendrick would presumably function mostly as a right-handed-hitting component in their first base/DH mix, while appearing as needed elsewhere on the diamond. Given their numerous existing options, he’d be one nice piece of the puzzle. The Marlins, meanwhile, would like to up their offensive output while adding some veteran leadership.

Kendrick is a Florida native, Ghiroli notes, but he resides in Phoenix. That would seem to leave plenty of room for multiple possibilities, if geographical preferences will drive his decision at all. It stands to reason that the 36-year-old would like to play again for a contending outfit, all else being equal.

We noted that the Rays made for a nice possible fit in our recent Top 50 Free Agent predictions here at MLBTR, though we ultimately guessed Kendrick would land with the Twins. That prediction was based in part upon the notion that there’d be sufficient interest to drive him into a two-year deal at around $6MM annually, which might be a bit rich for the Tampa Bay org. Ghiroli notes that Kendrick is seeking a short-term arrangement, though it’s not evident whether he has a preference for a one or two-year pact.

Parra wants to stay:

https://wtop.com/washington-nationals/2019/11/gerardo-parra-wants-to-stay-with-the-nats-keep-baby-shark-as-walk-up-music/

One of he, Taylor, and Stevenson probably is done here.

You want one of our OFs aside from Robles to be capable of playing CF.  Eaton isn't at this point, so MAT or Stevenson are a must.

Apples and oranges.  If Rendon goes, a much bigger investment must be made in a bonafied third baseman.  Can't really replace Anthony, but gotta try to come close.

Stevenson has zero trade value.  MAT might have a little, although if we tender him he's going to be fairly expensive for what he is let alone sending back anything of value.

I believe the Kendrick dilemma is similar to the Murphy dilemma.  He really belongs in the American league at this point.

Flores is underrated.

3rd catcher might work if there is a plan in place to use him.  You can and should liberally pinch hit or pinch run for the catcher anytime in the game.

If Kieboom is not ready to play second base next year, is he ever going to be ready?
We need a starting pitcher only if Stras leaves.
Definitely need a catcher.  Raudy Reed is just an insurance policy as far as I'm concerned.  (Boy, Spencer Kieboom really took a giant step backward  in 2019)
Yes on first baseman, but not sure what is needed yet.  I hope Matt Adams is not brought back.  I'm not convinced Zim is not going to retire.  I assume he'll communicate his intentions to management soon.
Multiple relief pitchers, not just one.
If it's not Rendon at third, it needs to be someone who can at least partially fill his shoes.

Stras already showed that he doesn't take orders from Boras.

Isn't it widely held that Greinke was overpaid?  Team's won't make that mistake again.  He's really good, but not THAT good.

He can also play second and probably could learn first.  Whether we resign rendon or not he'd be a good get.  Probably take 2-3 years at between $10 and $14 million per
