Did Merrifield bulk up last year? Went from 45 SBs to 20 with 10 CS, hit more HRs also.

Merrifield has a pretty cheap contract and is under control through 2023, but he's 30 and you'd think a rebuilding team like the Royals would rather move him before he takes a downturn. I wouldn't move Kieboom for him, but I wonder if something like Sharp, Garcia and Seth Romero/Denaburg (as a throw-in lottery ticket) get the conversation started.

if they want elite talent like Kieboom then oh well, but he's a guy I'm after if I am Rizzo

Fangraphs argues Will Smith should take his QO, 1 year / $17.8 million is better than he'll get on the open market.

I agree with that. No reliever should chase a long-term payday at this point unless you're at the level of Chapman. Even then, it's risky. Take the $18 million for one year because I don't see teams lining up to give relievers 3 or 4 year deals.

Smith has been pretty close to Chapman on a much worse team.

Like who?
Here's the relievers under contract for over 10 million next year

https://www.spotrac.com/mlb/rankings/relief-pitcher/

Maybe 2 or 3 of them even have an argument that they are likely to be worth the money:
My breakdown:
#1 is terrible
#2 has been up and down, and marginally useful as a late innings guy
#3 is not nearly who he used to be, and a below average late innings reliever
#4 is the best bet and most consistent, but has had his share of injuries and has had a down year and beats his girlfriend.
#5 had an 8.65 ERA this year
#6 decent converted starter, but only one averagish year as a reliever
#7 disaster contract so far.
#8 converted starter… results to be determined
#9 Good this year, looked like a flop last year, could go either way next year
#10 converted starter… average reliever so far
#11 terrible
#12 a shell of what he was 2 years ago
#13 11 million for 7 5+ ERA appearances
#14 converted starter salary
#15 decent, consistent reliever
#16 converted starter, unknown reliever stats
#17 pretty good, but beats his wife and chokes from time to time
#18 converted starter 6.2 era

And certainly not when they have to give up a draft pick. He might as well sign the QO or rent a vacation home through the June 2020 draft.

He's been really good but Chapman's ERA+ in his career is 184 and Smith's is 115.

I think Craig Kimbrel killed any potential for long term deals for relievers.

well, he was only Drew Storen in games 6 & 7 v us, right?  He was good the rest of the playoffs and just gassed and overused so the hitters could get to him.

Well, besides 2012 Game 5, Storen's playoff ERA was 0.00 that year.  And he didn't even get charged with a run in the 18-inning crapfest.

Predict when you think the contract announcements will happen

Strasburg....

1- soon, almost immediately
2- after the winter meetings
3- when pitchers and catchers report

Rendon
1- soon, almost immediately
2-after winter meetings
3-end of February
4- mid spring training

Cole
1-soon, almost immediately
2-after winter meetings
3- he will be the last of the Boras bunch

You may as well add Cole in there as well because all three will be coordinated.

Don't everyone forget, there is an extra roster spot to fill out. 26 man rosters start next year.

We'll see how he does next year. Track record of pitchers that sign mid year is not good. Give him a full spring training, and I think you see him get back to closer to what we've seen the past several years.

FA market is pretty bare bones after Rendon/Stras/Cole.

And if the Nats keep them both they automatically "win" the off-season

I don't hate this rule in theory. I am sure I will in practice.
