I don't know any other way to phrase this: if the first pitch is a good pitch to hit, hit it.  This isn't some freaking rag arm pitching in Coors in May.  It's Verlander.  You can't just hand him strike one every time.

mostly because many players who are not elite hitters have not properly set themselves, timing-wise, and are usually over amped, and thus their swing itself is impaired as well as their timing is often way off the mark...
