Gold Glove Finalists
« Topic Start: October 24, 2019, 04:32:01 PM »
Robles and Rendon being named finalists is no surprise. But Soto being named is a shock.

Also of note, Harper is a finalist now that he actually tries in Philly.

by some stats, he became very good. That means the stats are not good at things like measuring defense

DRS he's +7, I think without checking

Edit- after checking, I am wrong. Barely positive range and hands, ding for arm on uzr. Drs was 1.

Ah.

I honestly think he got on there because of how few qualified LFers there were this season. Acuna spent most of the year in CF due to Enciarte's injuries

Defensive metrics are a work in progress.

Soto can NEVER be a gold glover.  He's got a noodle for an arm.

LoCain deserves it.  Robles will win one soon, though.

Rendon will be laughing all the way to the bank.  Not sure if he cares about a GG at this point.

Team awards > individual ones

Bryces crowning moment in DC was winning the HR derby judging by his attitude.

I'll take the world series

He had 4 assists last year and now they don’t run on him.  I’m not sure he’ll win a gold glove but he’s pretty good at lf

I’m not sure criticizing Harper for enjoying winning the hr derby in front of home fans in dc is worth criticizing. He did win an exponentially bigger individual award while here without making it all about him.

I'm sure Soto has many individual awards in his future, I don't think the Gold Glove will ever be one of them. And that's OK.

I disagree. While I don't feel he is there yet, I think his work ethic could get him into the discussion as more than an after thought soon.

I remember last season during a MASN broadcast FP and Bob discussed Henley saying Soto could play center field in a pinch. My eyes rolled into the back of my head, since during his rookie season I thought he should be at first by now.

Soto came out this season and went from atrocious on defense to pretty solid. I could see him eventually being a plus glove out there.

He continues to be the player Harper should have been.

???  They ALWAYS run on Soto.  I don't understand how you can say that they don't run on him.  His arm is one of the weakest in baseball (if not THE weakest).

I don't think you are right.  I can't find statcast or other measures of throwing velocity, but IIRC all of the NAts regular outfielders throw 90+MPH.  There were some graphics on throwing velocity on one of the broadcasts.  Maybe MASN or maybe TBS. Average for an outfielder is 88-89 MPH.  Robles has a cannon, but both Eaton and Soto are very good.  What I recall was that our OF's velocity was better than the entire OF for the opponent. fWIW, Fangraphs have him rated a 55 arm, which is slightly above average.

Honestly...the more awards a player gets = higher the price tag when it comes time to resign.

But I dont care. It isnt my money and I think they deserve to be rewarded. I just hate when they post MVP numbers in walk years :cough: stras and tony :cough:. But when you bet on yourself it can pay off big time. I just hope these contracts dont turn into Albatrosses.

Harper and Trout's contracts are basically two beached whales after 35.

Rendon isn’t a case of walk year over performance. He’s been pretty consistent the past 3 years.

Stras is just healthy this year, I don’t know what to make of that.
