I always wondered if Boras kept some kind of kitty, or gets them some kind of insurance to for guys like Soto. You're right, the risk/reward equation doesn't play make sense to each individual player.
And what if he doesn’t get hurt, but just doesn’t perform?
Over his last 162 games, Juan Soto has 40 HR, 16 SB, 136 BB & 126 R. He’s only the 11th player ever to have 40+ HR/15+ SB /125+ BB/125+ R over any 162-game span in their careers. The others: Ruth, Gehrig, Mantle, Yastrzemski, Schmidt, Bonds, Sheffield, Bagwell, Chipper, Trout.
Three more years to enjoy him.
Maybe we should shut Soto down for the season just to keep him from getting hurt, he's the last one left standing.
Rizzo: “Juan Soto is the core of our team and we would be remiss if we didn’t try to sign him long term. Soto will be our linchpin and he’s as important a part of this franchise as anybody.”
I'm beginning to hate the "Extend" threads because it never happens.
Soto should sign a mega 10-year deal and hit free agency again at 33. He might end up clearing a billion dollars over his career.
Strasburg and Harrison!
Agreed. It's so much fantasy. Juan already brought us a WS victory. And his market value is through the roof. If you can't extend him now, then trade him in the off season to a team outside the division. Imagine what it can bring in.
It won’t bring in anything comparable to his value. If you were ever going to pay someone this is that someone. Don’t be dumb about this.
We don't know what he would bring in because he's never been shopped.
I’ll ask again: What is so sacrosanct about the soft cap? Paying the luxury tax is an indication ownership is in it to win as opposed to simply avoiding any risk. (And such caps enforced by mlb should be illegal.)
And the Nats would still be giving up one of the games great young talents for prospects. Prospects are hit and miss. You already know how good/great Soto is. He’s not Mike Trout but I think the situations are similar. At what point is a player so good that the return you’d get simply isn’t worth the risk? That’s how I feel about Soto.
