Juan Soto has 2 more pre-arb years and 3 arb years. Let's say that's a total of $50 million based on a standard $12/16/20 arb. Then add $30 million a year for every free agency year you want to buy out, as a starting point.

8 years, $140 million.
10 years, $200 million.
My favorite - 15 years, $350 million to be the biggest contract in history, make him a lifelong Nat, and probably end up being a bargain when you account for 15 years of salary inflation.

15 years still only puts him in his mid-30s at the end of it, and the NL is surely using a DH long before the end of thjat anyway.  He's a guy who, barring back injuries like Miggy, should hit very well at an older age still.

Boras works for Soto, not vice-versa.

that's true of all his clients and 95% of them go to FA.

According to this, we've got about $49 million in luxury tax cap space next year:

https://www.spotrac.com/mlb/washington-nationals/payroll/2020/

So if we sign Rendon for say $32 million, that leaves $17 million to fill in the holes in the bullpen and the IF.  Remember that Zimmerman, Cabrera, Adams, and Kendrick are all gone.

Figure Kieboom comes up as our every-day 2B.  We add Zimmerman back for $2 million.  Sign a LH 1B to platoon with him, and either bring back Cabrera or use Difo as the backup.

Potential relief pitchers under contact next year include Barrett, Doolittle, Elias, Glover, Guerra, Rainey, Ross, Suero, Strickland, Venters, Voth, and Austen Williams.  Figure Strickland, Venters, and Glover are gone.

I don't see how we have enough room next year to extend Soto when he's only making about $580k next year.

Also have to figure a Stras renegotiation getting him to about 30 million AAV

Has Stras' performances changed your mind on this, or do you still think it's too much?

I think it's too much. I just don't think he'll be healthy like this again. But I also think it's obvious that the Lerners will do it anyway.

Barring a stunningly bad end to the World Series, I think Nats can afford to keep both Strasburg and Rendon unless someone like the Ranges comes in and give Rendon an Arenado plus a bit more contract.

Attendance will jump and they're about to jack prices on advertisers and premium seating. Probably too late to do it for next season, but they'll find a way.

I'd say something about TV ratings, but we know that when we look at this thread in 2023 that the MASN situation will still be unresolved.

In case you needed verification about how special Soto is or what he did against Cole on Tuesday night.

First order of business is bring back Rendon.  Next is work things out with Stras.  Then you fill in the holes on the roster such as the bullpen, work out something with Zim and find a platoon partner, etc.  At that point you know where you stand financially.  Then I'd look to at least attempting early extensions with Soto and Turner if at all possible.

Strickland isnt a FA till 2021. He will be back next year. they arent gonna eat 1.9 mill. Also after arb Turners salary is gonna go up alot.

413 feet; seemed longer.  The one that landed on the train tracks was about the same.  The massive height of Soto’s bombs makes them look ‘Frank Howard-like’.
