Braves gave Acuna 8 years 100 mill buying out his pre-arb, arb, and first few free agent years.

Soto makes basically the minimum in 2020.  He's then eligible for arbitration in 2021, 2022, and 2023.  Then he's a free agent.  Acuna's deal is a good model on what it would take.  The only issue is facing the luxury tax right now and bringing a guy from a half mill to whatever annual salary Soto would get in a deal like Acuna.  I would think Soto's family could benefit from that kind of money now versus waiting.

His agent isn't Scott Boras.

IDK what Soto's family situation is, but it's not a model for a Soto deal. No way he takes 100 mil.

Boras probably makes sure his clients' families get some loot slipped to them to hold them over. They're probably very grateful to him for being so magnanimous towards them

Boras probably gets to write it off as a charitable deduction too.

This has him having 2 more pre-arb years, and then 3 arb years.

I wonder how much sense an 8/250m contract even makes to the Nats, which is probably in the ballpark of what it would take.   That's taking 25 million of the payroll for the next 2 years that could be spent on someone else.  And probably about 5-15 million for the following 3 years.  Is that worth it to have Soto for 3 FA years?  And that's all assuming he will continue to play as we all think he will, but is probably not as sure a thing we make it out to be.

It wouldn't take 8 years 250.  Again, Acuna got 8 years 100 million and he's seen as equal to or better than Soto.  Rememebr, you're buying out pre-arb and arbitration years.  Soto actually is pre-arb in 2020 and 2021, then arbitration-eligible in 2022-2024.  He would make a smidge over his current $578,000.00 in each of the next 2 seasons.  Harper for a comp made 5 million in year 1, 13 million in Year 2, and 21 million in Year 3.

So, right now Soto could be had for maybe around 45-50 million over the next 5 years.  Adding 3 years to that isn't going to cost an extra 200 million.

wait, I thought we had 4 years of arb with him.  He came up a month or so into last year, so he'll be a super two after next season.

There aren't others of that ilk.  Yankees and Red Sox stars are always going to be under the biggest spotlight.

Dodgers and the Cubs?? They're not in the same class of team-generated wealth?

honestly i think he probably has the same average and OBP moving forward, but jacks his slugging percentage up to the .600-.650 range. He is already becoming a pretty solid LF.

All of this is true if you’re playing OOTP. Soto has Boras who always pushes players to hit free agency- a fair offer isn’t going to be enough

Right, my point is I don't think some people are taking into account how "cheap" he is for the next 5 years of team control when they're saying 8 years 250 million or anything close to that.  It's essentially extending team control for 3 years and 200 million.  That's 66.6 million a year!

Juan Soto has 2 more pre-arb years and 3 arb years. Let's say that's a total of $50 million based on a standard $12/16/20 arb. Then add $30 million a year for every free agency year you want to buy out, as a starting point.

8 years, $140 million.
10 years, $200 million.
My favorite - 15 years, $350 million to be the biggest contract in history, make him a lifelong Nat, and probably end up being a bargain when you account for 15 years of salary inflation.

But it's also un-releastic to think that Boras is going to even listen to 3x17 million (100 million) or even 3x35 million (150 million) when it means hitting free agency at 29 instead of 26.

Boras works for Soto, not vice-versa.  Soto probably wouldn't take the same 8 years 100 mill from Acuna but to act like adding 3 years at 35 million each where he's now making 18.75 million annualy versus half a mill now wouldn't entice Soto?  Up to him and how much he literally wants to bet on himself, but that's a lot of cash for a DR kid.

You don’t hire boras if you plan on signing a fair market extension
