Extend Soto this off-season — after that it will be too late and he’ll prefer free agency to re-signing.  16 yrs, though his age-38 season, for $500M. Would be enough money that he and Boras would have to take it seriously, and it would signal that the Lerners are serious about making him a Nat for life. It’s not really too much money. He has 3 years of team control left - say those years are at $10M, $15M, and $20M, which might be less than he’d get in arbitration. Then, 13 free agent years at $35M per year. That comes to $500M even. It’s a big number that might actually get it done, but is also fair and reasonable from the team’s perspective. Get it done!

Soto back over 1.000 OPS, with .466 OBP and .544 SLG.

Leads NL in average (.321, vs Trea .318), OBP (.466 vs Harper .431).

The only way this cat remains a Nat is if they reinstitute the Reserve Clause in this year's CBA...

Soto is forcing himself into MVP a consideration.

But not homeruns. Over-rated.

Even sadder is that we know that's how it's gonna go down...

Zuckerman notes:

Juan Soto has now reached base 4 times in 24 games this season. The only players ever to do it in more games in a season are Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Ted Williams and Barry Bonds.

Batting .466 in September.

So he’s the best offensive player in baseball by a good margin, will continue to grow into power until he’s 30, and has been improving his defense?

and before we go hunting for asterisks, he did it in 153 games, so the ghost of Ford can go Frick himself

It's fun now to see guys trying to copy him as they come up, like Jesus Sanchez and Luis Garcia a bit.  Dude is what, 22? and he's already reached the "I wanna be like Mike" stage of his career.

the myth of needing protection is busted.  At least, needing a long chain of hitters before and after.  I'm thinking Bell is seeing better stuff because the bases are cluttered in front of him maybe more than Soto is seeing better stuff because folks fear Bell more.

The 55:20 BB:K is ridiculous.

For the first time in Spotrac history, our market valuation tool calculated a player to earn more than $500M on his next contract.

22-year-old #Nationals OF Juan Soto currently projects to a 15 year, $503M extension.

The Lerners can’t let him walk. I mean, they will but they can’t. It’s going to fracture the fanbase in my opinion.

Going into next season with no extension is a bad bad sign. They need to hand him a blank check this fall.

I mean, they got a pass in letting Harper walk because of Soto. They also got a pass because some fans thought he was a douche. This to me is different. Soto is pretty much loved by the entire fanbase. I do believe letting him walk will turn away a lot of fans. I mean, trading Trea pissed off a lot of fans but it was sorta understandable. This wouldn’t be at all. They need to get this done.
