I think those options will wait until game 6/7.  Max wants to focus on starts. I'd be ok with Rainey coming in the 6th or 7th. Pitching in these games has to take a toll on pitchers regardless of how many pitches are thrown. This could be a great chance for the bullpen to etch their names on this season!

That’s exactly why you want to close this out quickly if you can. Those extra days of rest while the AL continues to play could be enormous. If this series get to 6 or 7(!) games it’s an absolute disaster.

I see the ALDS going the full 7. We need to close this out tomorrow so everyone gets rest.

For the first time this year the Nats currently have the highest odds to win the World Series according to FiveThirtyEight.

https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/2019-mlb-predictions/

This is purely based on the fact that the ALCS is currently a tossup and we are very heavy favorites to win NLCS. Once an ALCS winner is determined Nats will 2-1 underdogs.

But still cool to see, given the start.

Burn this. Bury it. Delete it from the server.

they will be fine as long as they close it out in 5, that would mean 9 days rest for Scherzer (assuming he isn't used out of the bullpen in the next couple of days) and 7 days for Strasburg.

I just don't think that Max is ready to pitch tonight.  We all saw what happened to Verlander on short rest. If we bring him in, there are 2 things that could go wrong.  (1. He might not have his best stuff, and we end up losing anyway   (2. Pitching in high-stress games will LIKELY take a toll on him. This will effect him (negatively) for his next start.   I'd rather line up my starters at full strength and aggressively play (and manage) each game. There's no way that the Cards should beat a well rested Max or Stras. BUT... they could beat a compromised version.

Probably more like 3/2 by that chart.  It looks like they'd give us a 40% chance of winning if we finish the NLCS out.

This.

There is no way you bring in Scherzer in relief during the homestand when you have a lead. You save him for game 6. He would have 5 days rest.

not tonight but if he was needed for an inning to help close out the series either tomorrow or Wednesday then you use him and he still gets his rest since the world series doesn't start until next Tuesday

You’re right. I miscalculated.

We dont want to get to a Game 6 or 7. The Cardinals have a ton of postseason experience. You dont give them a chance at a comeback.

That might work. I'm optimistic that we won't need him anyway... we didn't need Hudson in game 1  ;)

Very cool.     I hope she gets a good response from the crowd.     Seems to be a big "secret" about tonight.    Been listening to 106.7 and even Carp (as a guest) was bein' coy about it.    Of course, maybe they just don't know yet.

I'd say let's get an OG Nats guy like John Patterson or Nick Johnson to throw out the first pitch but they'd get hurt walking to the mound.

did you hear the redneck that said, when asked where he would be watching tonight, "it's cornhole night so I'll be at the bar" :lmao:

isn't cornhole another form of bowling?
