Winning percentages of Nationals managers:
Dusty Baker: .593
Matt Williams: .553
Davey Johnson: .550
Dave Martinez: .540
Beyond the obvious difference in playoff records, consider the winning percentages for each of those in their second years as an MLB manager:
Baker: .494
Williams: .512
Martinez: .574
Johnson: .605
Now consider the change in winning percentage from their first to their second years as an MLB manager:
Baker: -.158
Williams: -.081
Johnson: + .049
Martinez: +.069
I actually liked the job both Baker and Johnson did, but Martinez showed real growth from last year to this year and from early in the season to late in the season. We may have had to suffer from some OJT for him, but he has been impressive post All-Star break.
Of course, some Nats fans are so entrenched in their position about the need to get rid of him that it may be impossible for them to change their minds, given the fact that any manager is going to make enough mistakes over time to provide ammunition for the Fire-Him crowd.
But those who are willing to change their minds when the cumulative body of evidence points in another direction have some solid reasons for thinking Martinez has become an asset to the team.
