Of course they like him, no team has as much fun at spring training.

Luckily you're on the case to tell us actually the best teams don't have fun at all

where was the cabbage in that video?

For a cabbage race, I would have bet on AJ Cole if he were still with the team.

I slaw what you did there...

What's a cabbage race?

Obviously a head to head competition.

February 16 via Zuckerman on MASN.com
Quote
Martinez came to that realization during the offseason, after spending time going back and analyzing various positives and negatives from 2018. He decided the lineup tinkering he used - particularly early in the season - wasn’t producing the desired effect.

So don’t be on the lookout for random games with Trea Turner batting sixth (something that happened 11 times last season) or as many instances of the pitcher batting eighth (29 times).

Dave Martinez said that he could see Victor Robles hitting ninth some games to give the team a second lead-off hitter at the end of the order.

I'm all for Robles batting 9th for a while.  Turner - Eaton - Rendon - Soto - Zimmerman - Dozier - Gomes - P - Robles.  You basically have 3 top of the order guys for two slots, unless you want to push both Rendon and  Soto out of the 1st inning.  You either bat Turner or Robles middle of the order or bat one 9th.  He's a rookie, so give him a chance to break in at 9th.

Dave does a poor job explaining crap sometimes a lot.

And a few have done it wisely and successfully.  But not the dumb ones.

I haven’t seen any studies to show batting the pitcher works. No matter who makes out the lineup.

zuckerman is the one who said "batting the pitcher 8th" (no direct quote from martinez) and there's a difference between messing around with your leadoff hitter for no reason and batting a rookie fast centerfielder 9th

The argument can be made for example in the case of Taylor, stuck at the bottom of the order because he stinks, and cannot improve because he's batting before the pitcher and so isn't going to get anything good to hit. Move him to nine, that's no longer true, and see what he can do. But did Martinez ever bat him ninth?

Yes, Taylor batted 9th quite frequently. In fact, he did it so much he even adopted the offensive output of a pitcher.

The Book says you will gain 1.6 runs per season batting the pitcher 8th. I can’t find the link though.

So a minimal, but still positive effect.

Yeah you're right (I looked at the splits).  I guess I just don't remember those.  Probably because he stunk at ninth too.

I was surprised he did it so much. Better than him batting leadoff, I guess.

No quotes but Zuckerman certainly represented those specific thoughts as having come directly from Martinez. So either the beat writer is putting words in the manager's mouth or the manager is contradicting himself day by day.

He had 41 PA in the 9 spot. How many of those were PH appearances though?

Martinez never lets me down, on that he's consistent.

I counted eleven "you know"s in 52 seconds.

He really does come across as a huge dumbass. How he ever impressed anyone in an interview is beyond me.

It is confusing for sure. Veterans speak very highly of him. So I can't argue with the professionals.

However listening to him sometimes is like watching that scene from Pootie Tang, Except that Dave is both characters...
