In the Street and Smith baseball preview magazine it said although Martinez had some growing pains the Nats played better in the second half of the season so that's cause for optimism. They were 34 -32 the second half of the season. Not so great.

worth a read:

Good article. One fundamental they didn't talk about is throwing to the wrong base and not hitting the cutoff man.

The guys from Talk Nats posted a video of Martinez from the Hot Stove event on YouTube. I finally got around to watching it and as much as I make fun of the guy it's almost kind of sad, he appears to be incapable of maintaining a coherent train of thought. The entire video consists of half sentences, jumping from topic to topic, drifting further and further away from each of the questions.

He claims that there were no surprises in his first season as manager, immediately hitting on the injury excuse. Then he brags about how as a coach he takes 25 guys and builds the character of the team, making them play as one, which sounds good if you assume that no one at the event paid attention to last season. Martinez is quite a Renaissance man, he boasts of being very hands on, he oversees the training staff and the medical team, he dabbles in everything, nipping problems in the bud. You'd think that he just led the 2008 team to 82 wins.

Best part was he raved about reading the book Mindset by Carol Dweck, he really liked all the quotes from famous athletes. Mindset is a self help book based on the notion that "everyone can get smarter if they work at it". Good luck with that Davey.

It's too early.   I just can't.

Day one of camp:

He learned nothing.

He mentioned another book he won’t name yet. I thought it was “the Secret”. Someone else thought Harry Potter.

With that type of incoherence he should be President.

As much as I want Dave Martinez to succeed this season (he has to), I cannot help but cringe when he speaks. Davey sounds like a child. Go Nats

https://theathletic.com/816072/2019/02/13/shawn-kelley-was-ready-to-retire-after-the-incident-thats-no-longer-the-case/

Quote
“It was frustrating for everybody in D.C.,” Kelley acknowledges. “There was a lot of tension when you have a team that is basically picked to be in the World Series and you are struggling to stay at .500, in a division you are supposed to hands-down win? There is a lot of blame, a lot of pointing fingers. There is a lot of frustration, so a lot of stuff boiled over...But we were so veteran, we almost needed a kick in the ass. Because it was like, we’re going to show up and win every day, which — that’s great, you have that confidence — but you still have to go out and have that chip on your shoulder, especially when everybody in the division is gunning for you."

“It was stale. It was very stale. To go to Oakland, (it was) the exact opposite: a bunch of hungry, young guys..."

Part of the story of Kelley’s glove-throw was that he was upset at having been put into a game in mop-up duty. Who chooses one of their set-up guys to close out a 25-1 lead? Kelley is careful, however, to include a kind word for Nats Manager Dave Martinez.  “There were a lot of things that went wrong...There were a lot of things that didn’t go the way they should have.”

Kelley went on to say that Martinez had a lot to learn in his first season but that he'd be surprised if Davey doesn't do better in his second year. Better than 82 wins with a $200 million roster, let's hope so.

Todd Dybas from NBCSports got a one on one interview with Martinez. I have to credit Dybas, he did a great job framing the questions. Martinez is a tough interview, he either repeats back the question or he forgets the question and heads off on a tangent.

Dybas started off with, other than the Circle of Trust what did you carry over from last spring and what are you doing differently. Martinez spoke for a minute on how much the players really believe in and like the Circle of Trust.

Dybas then mentioned that in previous interviews that Martinez had said he was going to focus on fundamentals this spring. After starting out by repeating the key word from the question along with his favorite "little things", Martinez gave his only decent response of the interview, get 27 quick outs, bunt defenses, scoring runs from third base with less than two outs, turning double plays. And then this nugget: they are working on team oriented defense, individually they are very good but he felt that they didn't work well together last year.

Dybas had a great question about pacing for the six weeks of spring training, how to keep guys engaged. Unfortunately Martinez didn't answer and went off on a tangent about making sure that guys are healthy and physically ready. Someone from the Nats may want to get Davey a pocket schedule, he finished with: "Come the 23rd we want to compete...we want to play the game the right way".

Next Dybas went to the bullpen and asked about the mid section, listing all of the guys competing for the last 4-5 spots on the roster. Martinez agreed that the mid section of the bullpen was critical, that it's about getting outs, and then repeated the guys Dybas had just named off.

Dybas ended with a question about the improvements from the rest of the division. Hard to blame Martinez for dodging this question, simply saying that his only concern was the Nats. But still it would have been nice to hear some comments on the competition, certainly Davey Johnson or Dusty Baker wouldn't have shied away.

This was the last five minutes of the podcast, the rest of it was a pretty good round up of the first couple days in Palm Beach:

Cabbage races today, what a freaking dope. It's not just the gimmick team building games, his big revelation yesterday was that he is going to have his catchers pinch hit, which is fine except that he's always looking for a trick. The guy is a goof, demote him to clubhouse jester and let's move on.

where was the cabbage in that video?

For a cabbage race, I would have bet on AJ Cole if he were still with the team.

Clearly from that video, the team hates Martinez and is unhappy doing random fun things during the opening bullcrap weeks in spring training.

Of course they like him, no team has as much fun at spring training.
