hate to say, but it is a nice move  for them.  They can shift Riley to 3d base.  Much cheaper in terms of prospects than an Arenado deal or even Seager.  Arenado had the opt out after 2 years, and Seager had the player's option triggered for the 3d year.  Same money for a year as Seager for a better player, and much cheaper than Arenado for the year and going forward.

Luis Rojas new Mets manager.

Felipe Alou's kid, but with a different last name?  From reading that article, it's a surprise he wasn't hired over Beltran in the first place, looks like a solid guy.

The Padres and Red Sox have discussed a potential trade that would bring Mookie Betts to San Diego, sources tell The Athletic:

Recent talks between the teams have focused on sending a significant amount of prospect talent and outfielder Wil Myers to Boston, according to sources. Multiple people familiar with the discussions characterized an agreement as unlikely, and the industry consensus is that Betts will be in a Red Sox uniform on Opening Day. Yet both sides appear to have legitimate interest.

Myers + prospects for Betts seems extremely counter to the Sox stated goal of cutting Payroll. They probably want to stick David Price in this deal.

Twitter chatter is that they’ve agreed to the players but the hangup is that Boston wants SD to eat more of Meyer’s contract.  Padres would keep their top five prospects.

If the Padres are keeping their top prospects and not eating much contract, why is boston doing the trade?

Boston isn't doing the trade unless SD agrees to eat more of Meyers' contract.  Olney reported a few days ago that the Red Sox are requiring that anyone who wants Betts must also take Price or Eovaldi at full salary.

Betts makes $27 million this year (his final year of his contract) and ownership wants to get the team under the salary cap.

Betts is making $27MM.  Myers is making $20MM a year and has another 4 years left (2023).  No way the Sox do this to save $7MM for one year and then have a 3 year, $61MM commitment to Myers after that.  he hasn't had a 2 fWAR year since 2016. :spaz:

Thinking about a Betts deal a bit more, SD has a very deep system and Bloom could be trying to thicken a very depleted system.  The only thing is that two of the Sox's best prospects profile at CI opposite Devers (Dalbec and Casas), so this is a commitment to Myers in a corner outfield spot.  SD taking on Price might make it worthwhile.  They take on a $96MM 3 year commitment to Price in exchange for dropping a 4 year, $80MM commitment to Myers, and get a year of Betts, too.  Sox get a reset this year, dropping almost $40MM off payroll.  For the out-years, they stretch a 2 year, $64MM commitment into a 3 year, $61MM commitment.  It's just it would really be a white flag on this year for the Sox.  It's something like an 8 win drop.

Twitter chatter from whom? Doesn’t sound like they are close to a deal.

Betts salary is irrelevant. He is worth it. Swapping Meyers for Price saves ~12 million AAV over the course of their contracts. That's pretty silly for a team with pockets like the Red Sox.

Betts wants to test free agency and the Sox arent going to compete next season. So either use him to get the best prospects you can or use him to get out from under the Price (or Eovaldi) deal. But swapping him for meh prospects and 36 million over the next three years is dumb.

It's weird how just a few years ago a lot of people were worried about payroll disparity in MLB and posting things like "can small market teams ever compete again" and in 2020 we have two very wealthy teams (Red Sox and Cubs) trying to aggressively dump salary because of some paltry luxury tax.

BREAKING: Teams discussed player openly on the trade market, and they discussed players and prospects, and money. Cool update. Baseball writers are hilarious.

An entire article specifically put together to draw eyeballs and for the writer to feel useful and Twitter discussion with the real info buried:

I'm going to write an article that the Nationals and Indians discussed Lindor but an agreement is unlikely. It's equally as useful and true as this crap.

The Sox prospects are pretty much immaterial.  Casas is several years away and Dalbec isn't projected to be good enough that you make sure to clear space for him, plus Myers can handle LF in Fenway at least.  This is all about optimizing the prospect return and money dump.  Betts is just the cost that must be paid to restock a Dombrowski-induced farm system wasteland and a Dombrowski payroll.

not going to argue too much with this.  Dalbec isn't Kieboom, who you want to clear space for, and I think Myers could play left with Beni and Bradley covering right and CF.  A deal with Price and Betts for Myers + prospects more or less is dropping out of the wild card race to restock.  It's probably too late to then take the $40MM and spend up to the CBT threshold to make up for the lost wins.

Yeah, but if I were them I'd rather dump Eovaldi than Price if they have any thought of being anywhere near competing.

Eovaldi is essentially dead money, just as he was the second the contract was signed (one year's playoffs notwithstanding).  That might be the most inexplicable $50M+ contract I've ever seen.  He has 2 TJs in his past, has never even made 30 starts in a season, and has never thrown even 120 innings with an ERA+ better than league average.

Price is at least still useful, and might even recover a bit.  He costs $15 million a year more than Eovaldi, but that's 2 WAR, roughly.  And even a half-season of crappy David Price is likely 2 WAR better than whatever Eovaldi is going to do.
