Maybe Doolittle's issues were more about fatigue than anything else. He was overused in the first half of the season and the rest seems to have done him some good. Have to say he has handled all of this with class though. I remember previous "closers" who would get their jock strap in a bunch over a change in role. These guys are truly team oriented.

for the second consecutive season, Joe Kelly destroys the Dodgers' playoff hopes.

Good read here:

Just horrible, horrible managing by Roberts with the season on the line. Stayed with Buehler too long but got lucky, stayed with Kershaw too long, and stayed with Kelly too long.

I totally agree.  We had to lean on Doo so heavily, and he finally wore down.  He got some rest, and I think has returned to form.  However, he understands it's about matchups and that Huddy is also very capable of getting the final outs.  Doo is a team player...they all are.  I think this is by far the best team chemistry and selfless group we've had.  That counts for a lot, and I hope that Rizzo and Davey continue to emphasize that culture with any offseason moves.

Interesting snippet of information:

Worst 5 ERAs when facing elimination with >=20 innings pitched.

Tim Wakefield      6.75
Clayton Kershaw   5.77
Roger Clemens      5.28
Pedro Martinez      5.17
Max Scherzer      5.06

That is some list!

That's funny.

Lots of ill advised relief appearances, short rest, and leaving guys in too long that I can remember for all those guys.

where did you get that?  Was that 20+ innings in elim games?  I don't recall Wakefield pitching in too many elim games other than the relief appearance in ALCS game 7 2003 (Aaron Boone).  Clemens makes sense to me.  The As lit him up I think in 1988 and 1990, and the Sox I think maybe in '04 (I forget if he started game 7 ALCS).

It was on the Talkin’ Baseball podcast on YouTube. I think the guy said it was from ESPN.
