Good start this season at High-A: .308 / .457 / .803Now playing LF.
But he still needs to learn per some folks here. So patience.
If Antuna cannot crush at Wilmington, then he's no value. It's not the hitting that he's there for. It's the fielding.
He missed like 2 seasons of development, and only started to hit High A towards the end of last season. It doesnt hurt to let him stay in Single A for half a season. He's only 22.Man, y'all just want to rush everyone through the minors
I'm not big on rushing dudes. Antuna's issue is that he's already burning his second option year this year. He might be the only 40-man player still in A ball in the entire league, and it's his second year eating options. This is the rare situation where it's probably prudent to push a dude.
Honestly, who cares? Is there someone else that needs that roster spot? If he's magically in Double A next week does that make it suddenly worth a 40 man roster spot? Hes there because he lost two years, one to injury and another to the pandemic.Honestly, he isnt even slugging .400. I dont think he's ready for Double A. He can stay down there all season. He isnt blocking anyone and we have nothing to lose.
The problem isn't this year. It's that next year is his final option year. If you don't give him a shot to get to MLB by the end of '23, he'll go into Spring Training in 2024 having to be kept on the MLB roster or go through waivers. Best way to get him there is to get him to AA pretty soon so he can get decent time there and AAA.
This is where I'm at. It isn't like there's a player I wish was on the 40 man in his place.I think the original sin was panicking and adding Antuna to the 40 man. Was he really at risk of being stolen in the Rule 5 draft? I get protecting Adon. Some bad team could have use him as a swing arm between the rotation and pen. But I don't think anyone could have held Antuna on the active roster all season.
Antuna might not have been picked in the major league phase, but he'd have been a dead certainty to go in the minor league phase.
I guess I never really understood the minor league rule five. Have they gotten rid of that with the new CBA?
Not that I'm aware. Minor League Rule 5 eligibility is the same as MLB except that anyone in AAA is also protected (even if not on the 40-man), which covers most of the fringe types even if not protected from the major league portion.
