Quote
Cronin, a 21-year-old junior, was strictly a reliever for the University of Arkansas Razorbacks, saving 12 games while posting a 2.00 ERA, 14 walks, 40 Ks, and a .163 BAA in 27 innings pitched in 2019.

“This is a guy who is a pure reliever,” MLB.com’s Jim Callis said while offering analysis on the pick, “and he’s one of the best in college baseball, so he can get [to the majors] pretty quick and if you like spin rates, you love Matt Cronin, because he’s got outstanding spin rates on both of his pitches. A 92-96 MPH fastball gets tremendous carry up in the strike zone, it’s one of those fastballs that seems like it rises, and then when you’re trying to deal with that, he has an over-the-top curveball, that could be a true hammer, in the mid-to-upper 70s, there’s effort and recoil in there, so you’re not going to make him a starter, Arkansas never really tried to do that. Had trouble throwing strikes early in his career, but he [did a] better job as a sophomore, regressed a little bit this year. If he can throw strikes he can get to the big leagues very quickly.”

“You’re not [entertaining] any idea of making this guy a starter,” Callis added, “you’re saying go out there, do what you do, go after guys with that fastball and curveball and you’ll go as quick as your strike-throwing ability takes you.”

20 IP, 0.90 ERA, 10 H, 2 ER, 37 K and .154 BAA. He walks too many people (10) and will need to clean that up, but he could be a quick-to-the majors guy like Bowden and Duquette predicted.

good chance he comes up sometime next year. He pitched a ton of innings this year so he is ready.

Hes only pitched 48 innings this year, between college and pros. He pitched 48 in college last year.

I have been watching him, and I was hoping theyd be more aggressive with him. The pen could use all the help it can get. I would've at least bumped him to Potomac by now, to see if he can keep it going. If he kept dominating there, who knows how high he could've gotten.

I'd agree, hes up next year. Going to need pen help next year too, so hopefully he becomes a fixture.

He's in low A ball and walking a lot of guys. Not really sure our pen needs more walks.

A prediction that Cronin, now at Wilmington, will make it to the majors this year:

He’ll be at double a by the end of the month, then will probably get his first mlb exposure as an extra arm on a double header day.  I’m optimistic about hand and clay so one of them would have to be injured or call him up for a righty and say freak it

named to the MLB pipeline prospect team of the week:

https://www.mlb.com/news/prospect-team-of-the-week-may-17-2021

Quote
RP: Matt Cronin, Wilmington Blue Rocks (High-A)
(Nationals No. 10)
0-0 W-L, 0.00 ERA, 2 G, 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 6 SO, 0.50 WHIP

Cronin struck out six of the seven batters he faced last week, with only a walk marring an otherwise perfect two appearances. He has surrendered just one hit and two walks while striking out 11 in 5 1/3 innings this year, lowering his career ERA to 0.66 in 27 1/3 frames.

Im wondering if sooner is in order, with plans for a reduced workload or shutdown in late August. He didnt pitch much either and he isnt too far removed from college

I bet he never steps foot in Rochester. He'll be in the majors sooner than later.

When is it too early to start expecting him in DC? Maybe mid July, early August?

I see no reason to wait on Cronin. We need arms desperately right now, he has pro stuff and is 23. It's not like a Starting Pitcher where you are concerned with stretching him out and innings etc. Let's see what he's got.

Control issues seem to have revealed themselves in Double A. Seems like a prime candidate to stay where he's at and maybe go to the AFL
