So like, when you get drafted, how is service determined? Like does each branch hold a separate draft, or is two different ping pong ball containers? Like it comes up Navy and then *name*

During my time, it was mostly Army.    However, on occasion a USMC "volunteer" would be chosen.    The ping pong balls were in one container which only determined order of birthdays.    People could still avoid the draft by being in college or having a doctor write a note.       The branch was determined after you passed the induction physical at the Federal BLDG in Pittsburgh

What about the Navy?

What about the Navy?

Navy and AF had people knocking down the doors to avoid the draft.     Few wanted to be a grunt.     :)

The navy and Air Force enlistments were at 100% so all draftees were going to be ground pounders of one shade or another of green. I don’t know how they assigned draftees into each branch?

I heard stories about a Marine coming in the room and picking "volunteers".     Day I went, we were hoping that wasn't the case.    Though a lot of the Army draftees still ended up 11B.

Same with the reserve and guard. And unlike the current wars they didn’t activate hardly any of them.

I didn't know the right people to get into the Guard.   I guess you had to be a Bush or a LeRoy Kelly.

No pro athlete was ever drafted to Nam. Or anyone with connections. A VERY few volunteered (e.g. Rocky Blier).

Rocky Bleier was drafted after his rookie season.

I remember Jerry Smith, TE of the redskins joined the DC guard to avoid being drafted.

Oh

You're Vietnam. I thought you were WWII

Yea, I sleep well at night knowing that it will take an act of Congress to get me back into the military.  And then I become an O-3

You are right. But he did volunteer for Nam probably could have got off easier?

I don't know for sure but I imagine it wasn't his style to avoid the war.

What's the record for most posts in a GDT before the game starts?

The entire Guard unit that Bush got into was loaded with Dallas Cowboys. At its height, any unmarried male without a protected job or a school dropout was probably going to be drafted and often shipped to tote a gun in the jungles of  Nam.

I once knew a guy who was in navy personnel and he said any 17yo high school dropout who enlisted was assigned as a machine gunner on a swift boat. :)

You’re minimum 82 if you fought in Korea. How many WWII vets are even left?

The last Civil War vet died in 1956..

Thank you very much.    :)     I golfed with a guy last week who was scheduled to rotate out on February 1, 1968.    They held him over.

it was around half a million left alive in 2018.  That's out of 16 million who served in WWII.  Estimate is somewhere around 2030 the last survivors will be gone.
