Another blowout loss. A bust if I ever saw one. 7 hits 7 runs 7 EARNED runs in three whole innings. 6.82 ERA.

Time to convert him into a reliever. That will help in allowing you to trade Finnegan and Harvey and not have much of a drop-off in the bullpen for next season.

Rutledge does not seem to wear down. It has been more that he is inconsistent: a couple of fine starts, which should be encouraging, and then he bombs. As if his foot injury bothers him enough that he has been erratic.

He isnt better than last year. I think this is more than his early season foot injury. He just doesnt seem to be starter material at this point.

Its a small sample size, but looking through his last few starts, in all but one, the majority of his strikeouts are coming the first time through the order. I think this is less about being consistent as it is lacking the secondary pitches needed to overwhelm opposing batters, and lacks the command to get outs.

We're developing starting pitchers better now. The pressure to turn Rutledge into a starter is lessened now. Lets do what we did with Tim Cate and Joan Adon, and see if we can find a major league role for Jackson

I mean ... maybe, but right now, lets get him to decent reliever.

He's 25, still walking a ton of batters without an especially impressive K rate.  Yet another first round draft pick bust.   Maybe give him a few starts in September to see if Doo can work his magic on him, but he's burning a valuable 40 man spot.

Talknats makes the case for Rutledge as a reliever or closer noting he’s generally dominant in 1-2 innings but falls apart after that:

Good article, thanks for sharing.  That might be the right move, especially if Finnegan's gone after the deadline.

Help me understand...the Wood thread was closed 3 or so days before he was actually brought up, but this one remains open for posting even after a start...

TIA

I locked the Wood thread on Monday, July 1 as it was clear that unlike the promotion of Rutledge, Wood’s wasn’t temporary.

Kinda think he earned another start. I was surprised he didnt implode yesterday. And the Brewers are a decent hitting team.

Probably did earn Herz’s spot for now.

They're both fringe starters in MLB.  But there's more urgency in figuring out whether Rutledge can start as next year is the last time he can be optioned.

is he on his 2nd or 3rd?

I suppose they can manage Herz's innings better in the minors

Second.  He had to be added before last year and was.  But given how long he's been a profession, he won't get a fourth option.

I'm ok with him going back to AAA and see if he can string together 3 or 4 good starts in a row, but ideally he earns a slot later in the year. The only thing is if we make him a reliever, it would be nice to do it this year

Rutledge optioned back to AAA

Don't need a starter for a few days, but he earned another start whenever he is eligible to return. Ah, to pull Corbin from the rotation and let Herz and Rutledge try again.
