There are two hall of famers on that staff. I am not sure it's representative of baseball as a whole back then.

Obviously, that was a record setting (for then) team. (Though swept by the NY Giants in the WS). But ... with only 8 teams in each league, all but the cellar dwellers (like the Senators, A's, etc) had excellent starting staffs. Teams only carried a couple relievers back then.

6th Round (#183) - Jackson Cluff, SS, BYU, 6'0", 185 (maybe the real Harper pick)
7th Round (#213) - Todd Peterson, RHP, LSU, 6'5", 230
8th Round (#243) - Jeremy Ydens, OF, UCLA, 6'2", 200
9th Round (#273) - Hunter McMahon, RHP, Texas State, 6'3", 185
10th Round (#303)- Andrew Pratt, C, Lubbock Christian U., 6'3", 225

From mlb.com:
https://www.mlb.com/draft/tracker/all/team/nationals

Peterson throws fire out of the LSU bullpen -- the 6-foot-5, 220-pound right-hander gets up to 97 mph with his fastball. He's got a good curveball, too, when he's commanding it. As a junior this season, Peterson has a 3.83 ERA and 40 strikeouts in 44 2/3 innings. He's improved his strikeout numbers every season since joining the Tigers, who are now playing in the NCAA Tournament as the No. 13 national seed.

After previously pitching for Coffeyville Community College, McMahon made the jump to Texas State for his redshirt sophomore season in 2019. The right-hander underwent Tommy John surgery in the past and hasn’t found much statistical success in his collegiate career, but he has good arm action that helps him generate sink and bore with his 94 mph fastball. Finding greater consistency with his curveball and changeup, two pitches that have been impressive at times, could be the key.

It seems like Rizzo is focusing on college relief pitchers - 5 pitchers in 10 rounds, including Cronin (4th), Dyson (5th), Peterson (7th), and McMahon (9th), all relievers.

Anyone know how many of these players are on schools still playing in the NCAA tournament?  Are LSU, UCLA, and Florida still in?

Yeah, Feller was the original flamethrower when he first came up and was young. Wynn, Lemon and Garcia were all hard throwers too. All pitched for MANY years.  Don't know about Houtteman.

If pitching year-round from age 10 is the problem, you'd think the bright minds out there would take steps to remedy that.

As a laugh, true story that Feller, from Van Meter, Iowa learned to pitch in the '30s by throwing at a bullseye painted on the family barn. The velocity was in his genes I guess.

The original flamethrower was Walter Johnson.

Took RP Matt Cronin 123rd overall in the 4th. Ranked 73rd on mlb.com.

Cronin has been a bullpen mainstay for Arkansas since his freshman year in 2017 and set a school record with 14 saves last year, when the Razorbacks finished runner-up at the College World Series. He'll likely be the first reliever drafted in 2019, perhaps as high as the second round by a team that places a lot of emphasis on analytics. There's nothing subtle about Cronin, who attacks hitters with two plus pitches that feature outstanding spin rates. His 92-96 mph fastball gets great carry in the strike zone, appearing to rise as it reaches the plate. His over-the-top arm slot helps him get nice depth on his curveball, which can be a true hammer in the mid 70s. Cronin has a lot of effort and some recoil in his delivery, so there's no thought of trying to deploy him as a starter. He battled the strike zone as a freshman before pounding it as a sophomore, but his control has regressed this spring. He projects as a setup man with perhaps a chance to close if he provides more strikes.

Though its Bowden and Duquette, they seem to think Cronin could make it up to the majors by the end of the year. they say he is a Doolittle clone who throws a ton of high spin rate FB but has a 12/6 curve to get people off it.

curious how he fell to us and why Houston did not take him.  If you are talking spin rate, then they are the gurus.

I think they just mentioned it because he works up in the zone so the high spin rate makes it look like the ball is rising. they also said his violent delivery makes it so bringing him up if he dominating is easier because there is no sense in refining it because he will never be a starter or multiple inning reliever.

Rutledge signed
ESPN:

17. Washington Nationals: Jackson Rutledge, RHP, San Jacinto College

Who is Rutledge? If you thought Alek Manoah was big, wait until you see the 6-foot-8 260-pound Rutledge on the mound. Rutledge landed at San Jacinto after transferring from Arkansas and dominated with a fastball that touched 98 regularly this spring.

Why the Nationals took him here: Six-foot-8 with a high 90s fastball, a cutter and an improving breaking ball. It's not hard to understand why Washington would jump on a chance to draft a pitcher with that upside, but it remains to see what he'll do against elite competition after taking the junior college route to the draft. -- Mullen

Sbnation mentioned reports are ~ 150k under slot.

This afternoon, Rutledge official became a part of the organization when he signed what is reportedly a $3.45M bonus, which is below the recommended slot value of $3,609,700 for the 17th overall pick.

kid seems to just want to play and get promoted quickly.  This is the JZ path. This team doesn't play games with trying to keep guys out of Super 2 status. He says he's getting assigned to the Gulf Coast team initially just to get back to throwing and then will get his next assignment.  I'll guess short-season rookie ball (Albany still, right?).

Didn't see a FTP thread about Cronin so I'm bumping this.

I understand that a 21 y/o from the SEC should perform well in low A but Cronin has been unreal since signing.

20 IP, 0.90 ERA, 10 H, 2 ER, 37 K and .154 BAA. He walks too many people (10) and will need to clean that up, but he could be a quick-to-the majors guy like Bowden and Duquette predicted.
