Caps just announced a no-backpacks policy.  I actually like this.  Bruins fans bring some of the damnedest things to the ATM, it's as if they just came straight to the game from a power tool sale at Home Depot.

If anyone has seen it in person...thoughts on the new jumbo-tron at the ATM?

I gave away my preseason tickets but did hear that the sound is apparently even louder and clearer than it had been.  Haven't heard specifically about the picture quality, though the old one was not that old if I'm not mistaken...6 years?  Maybe 7?

I know from being in other arenas, especially Tampa, that whatever we had was not near to state of the art.  I do understand that hosting basketball limits the size.  Really looking forward to seeing this one...

Got me thinking and found the Caps pre-season game with the Blues.

After baseball (Nats) in Seattle and then the Cards' series, I'll take crappy hockey for a change of pace.    :)      Plus, JB and Craig are music to my ears.

I turned the channel after Carlson's blast from the slot   ...   for no score.     I just declared "season" and moved on.     :)

Ta dah  ....   I found the winning formula.    Turn the channel and they win.    :)     I did get to see the high lights.

The scoreboard is MASSIVE. Sort of like when Nats Park opened, the Caps are still figuring out what to do with the additional space it provides. I hope the image below displays (if it doesn't, copy and paste the URL into a new browser tab). It's from Monday night. In the big red space below the score, they've now added shots on goal (below the NBC Sports logo) and they've shortened the red space to display team statistics on the bottom half, things like power play time, hits, etc. The full red space shown here is needed for basketball because you show stats for all players on the floor at any given time, but in hockey you never have more than two players' penalty time running for manpower purposes at any one time, so you don't need as much space.

There are also big new boards in the arena's upper corners. Don't yet know what they have planned for those, but the interesting part for now is that they have duplicates of the scoreboard's video board on the back sides facing the stands.

I wonder how the scoreboard will be moved out of the way for events like concerts and, perhaps, the Valor (arena football). The old one got raised all the way to the roof. This one appears too big to fit into the opening up there. I assume maybe the round piece on the bottom can be retracted upwards into the smaller square piece, which in turn can be retracted into the larger one? I don't know.

I thought the ice seemed considerably brighter than in the past, but I think it's probably because it seems darker over the stands, which in turn makes the ice stand out more. Not nearly as dark as the Capital Centre was, for those who remember, but darker than it's been.

Edited to add: Here's a picture from last night showing the addition of shots on goal. Several of us submitted comments to the Caps after Monday's game asking for this to be added because on Monday, shots were only shown on the ribbon boards at either end of the arena. From my seat, I couldn't see the Caps' shot total because the scoreboard blocked the view of where that info was. I don't have a picture showing the additional stats they started posting partway through the game.

I'm eager to check it out, but I would tend to agree.  One of the things that stands out from my memories of Cap Centre is how the ice seemed to glow and how vivid that made the uniforms seem.  Anyway, those are fond memories of a much-younger me who just loved going to games there, as inconvenient as it was for a NoVa resident.

The boxes at the old place were way up in the rafters, so back when smoking was still allowed by the end of the game it was like Vesuvius up there.
