How the mighty have fallen. I was in Cincinnati for the weekend series with the reds. I was listening to a talk show on the reds flagship station and the host and callers were all saying they thought coming into the series the reds would either sweep or take two out of three. They were saying they had a golden chance to get closer to .500 and blew it. This is the reds talking about the nationals. What has the world come to.

I mean, it seems like maybe that's a Reds problem and not a Nats problem given that they actually lost the series..

If he plays CF for the rest of the season, and keeps hitting .214 and stops hitting for power, and the Phillies pitching falls off a cliff, we have a chance.
So there is not chance. I would say the Phillies pitching has already fallen off and they will address it at the deadline.

Bryce is gonna get on a heater and carry the team. Like he never did here.

he's already on one: .357 / .357 / .750 over his last 7 games with 2 HRs and 9 RBIs in 28 ABs, and that's with going 0 for his last 8.

He'll never touch his 2015 and 2017 numbers here with that K rate.  He's become Adam Dunn.

He’s become Dave Kingman. With better hair.

Phil’s called up Adam Haseley. UVA boy. He will split CF with Kingery.

It's odd to me how he went from a slugger that actually had a very respectable K rate to this all or nothing guy.  I'm not a hater, although I'm not going to "root" for him to figure out within our division.  I do genrally like to see players meet their potential, however.  Not sure what's happened in his development.  He does still take a huge amount of walks, but so did Adam Dunn.  He may just be a 35 HR guy that hits .250ish with a solid OBP due to the walks.  That's not bad by any stretch, but not a Franchise player when you're an average corner OF.

McCutcheon our for the year with a torn ACL.  I don’t understand why they don’t extend the infield fly rule to apply to that situation.

Caught in a rundown because Kinsler let a pop up drop to get the double ply

I’ll be honest though if the intent of the rule is to prevent purposely dropping the ball to get a DP, it doesn’t make sense for it not to be in force with a man on first only.

Because it could allow teams to drop balls to get a speedier runner off the base paths. And the purpose is to prevent a shot at a triple play.

I get that. But why is it any different with a man on second?

because with men on 1B and 2B you can get that DP you were talking about and the runners are at the mercy of the fielder. With only one man on it can be prevented by the batter running out the play

More importantly, Segura failed to run out the pop-up, that left McCutcheon held up between 1st and 2nd.

I guess I can understand the logic of not applying the IF fly rule in that situation.  if the 2B drops the ball on purpose they are still likely to get one out, and they open themselves up to the potential of an error.

It only worked this time because Segura fell down on the swing and jogged to 1st.

I remember folks talkin' about his fragility to the "big lights" of NY.    Word was NY would wear on him after being in Cincy.    Wait til they start booin' him in Philly.    We're talkin' a bawling heap.    He won't even be able to walk to the plate without breakin' down.

The Phillies OF defense just got really bad.  With a pitching staff that needs all the help it can get, that's trouble.

Jay Bruce lifetime: Home Runs: 302, RBI: 909, BA .246

Not sure why all the hate towards this guy. He's no Willie Mays, ok, I get that. But he is a real major league player who has had a respectable career.

Bruce is a step below McCutcheon in LF. Haseley/Kingery are an improvement over Herrera in CF. Roman Quinn would be a major upgrade defensively in CF but he’s not much of a hitter. Harper has gone from a -18 in defensive WAR last year to a plus 4 this year. One of the reasons I am skeptical about these defensive analytics.
