Is it possible to put someone on the 10 day IL for rest?

Isn’t that why everyone goes on the IL?

Yes. You just claim an injury. Everyone is banged up in some way.

Not sure Doolittle will agree to a "phony" DL stint when he has a lucrative vesting games-finished option. He could easily file a grievance with the MLBPA saying the team is just trying to get out of it.

And if he weren't rocking an ERA over 5 in the second half, he might have a case.

Oh and he's admitted he's tired: https://mlb.nbcsports.com/2019/08/13/sean-doolittle-concerned-about-workload/
Quote
The lefty said, “I haven’t really amassed this kind of bulk in several years. There’s nights like last night where you feel a little bit out of wack, a little bit sluggish. It catches up to you after a while.”

That plus altering his mechanics has really been a problem. Ever since Maddon protested the game in May, Doolittle has struggled:

Pre-Joe Maddon: 1.71 ERA, 2.31 FIP, 10.71 K/9, 2.57 BB/9, 0.43 HR/9
Post-Maddon: 5.16 ERA, 4.43 FIP, 10.01K/9, 1.82 BB/9, 1.82 HR/9

And it seems like every time he does an interview, he talks about altering his mechanics in some way. I think he knows that Maddon was right and that he was touching the ground prior to his pitch. He is trying to fix it during the season, but because of his workload, he can't really dedicate any time to a bullpen session. A trip to the IL would allow that.

Doolittle looked really sharp on Sunday, so not sure it is a long term thing.   He shouldn't have been used Monday.   We warmed up on Saturday too, let's not forget.

Both Iglesias and Votto fouled off several tough two strike pitches before their hits. It happens.

Still need the doctors to find something medically wrong or for him to agree to it like Rosenthal did.

I don't think they can give him 10 days off with an IL stint at this point in the season.  Davey just has to be willing to manage his load and even blow games with him in the dugout and not even in the bullpen, let alone the mound.

As for the Holland  / Elias shuffle, it is 2.5 weeks until the roster expands.  Elias has not started throwing.  I'm going to guess there's a way to shuffle Rainey or some other roster spots to the minors on options so that they do not have to expose to waivers anyone except maybe Guerra.

Partial season stats for relievers are bogus.   Half the runs given up during that time were in 2 games against the Mets.  He had some pretty dominant games during that stretch too.  The 5 out save vs Atlanta, 2 strong outings in that Col double header, striking out the side against Atlanta a couple times, Sunday's 1-2-3 inning against the Mets best hitters....

maybe just not pitch him as much?  With Strickland and Hudson we have some 9th inning options we didn't have a few weeks ago.

Except we've now used Hudson 4 out of the last 5 days. And Strickland is coming back from a rather substantial injury.

The whole reason we got these guys was so we could GET to Doolittle in the 9th and not have to use him in a 4-5 run game.

Bring back Stammen, it would cost a laundry ticket at this point.

Shoulder fatigue can mean one of two things: having the strike zone on ignore, or not missing bats.

Aaron Barrett would be a nice add.  11Ks, 1BB, in his last 9.1IP

He's still getting lots of strikeouts and few walks, so no fatigue?

I don't have numbers to substantiate it, but I've seen several Nats games of late where the Nats offense blows opportunities to expand 2, 3, 4 run leads and ultimately Doo has to close it out.  We'll go up 3 or 4 and have a couple guys on and no outs in the 6th and ho hum not push across more.  Seems like no big deal, then the opposing teams chips away a little in the 7 and the 8th and Doo comes in hanging on for dear life.

We need to step on the throat and have more games coasting late using the likes of Rainey.

Well I suppose that's better than managing games and blowing his load.

Then we're willing to not make the playoffs? Because Doolittle is probably the only reason we're not 4-6 games back of the WC at this point.

Just a guy who is going to be a free agent at the end of the season and would only cost a low-end prospect

nah, but I want him fully available for the Milwaukee / NYM / Cards / Phillies games left on the schedule.  If that means gambling on a Strickland, Rodney, or Suero for the Reds and Marlins of the world, so be it.  A loss is a loss, but a loss to a WC contender or ATL means a win for one of those teams too.

The trade deadline has passed, and there's only a single deadline now.  No more August trades.  So only the first part of your sentence matters, albeit only for next year.
