Suero was great last night. We have repeated evidence he can’t pitch back to back. He’s not Barraclough.

He was great last night?

Pardon?

A walk, a hit and an earned run and getting yanked for Doolittle was great? Were we watching the same game?

I wrote this right after the game. I was talking about Friday night. He had a 1-2-3 inning and his changeup looked quite good.

He had a better ERA on no days rest last year. *shrugs*

did a little poking around on Suero's performances to see when he gets in trouble.

He's given up 19 earned runs in 27.2 IP.  10 of those runs are in 3 appearances - 4 on 4/27, 3 on 5/21, and 3 on 5/23.  The only game of those 3 he pitched the day before was 4/27.  He's pitched 3 days in a row on 4/6-8, and on back to back days 4/13-14, 4/22-23, 4/26-27, 4/29-30, 5/26-27, 6/4-5, and 6/7-8 (7 times).  In the 9 outings when he's pitched the day before, he's given up no runs 5 times, one run 3 times, and 4 runs once.  Focusing on the 4 times he's given up runs, on 4/14, he pitched 1 inning, 3 batters, the game before, then faced 6 batters giving up 1 run on on 2 out double on 4/14.  4/27 was the 4 run disaster, which was a 10th inning in which he started by only getting one out the 1st 5 hitters (to be followed by Miller and Grace who were lit up), after a short successful 2 batter appearance on 4/26.  6/5 he was ineffective after facing 6 batters and going 1.1 IP shutout the game before.  6/8, he got 2 outs after a leadoff walk, then gave up a single.  The night before, he pitched a clean inning.

On 5/21, he pitched a 1-2-3 6th before blowing up in the 7th (JD Davis 3 run homer).  On 5/23, he also gave up a  3 run homer in the 8th, to Carlos Gomez, after a double, 2 Ks, and an IBB.

Pulling this together, if 4/14 and 6/8 were the tolerable (single run, hit with 2 outs doesn't scream poor usage), then I think it comes down to being careful about pushing him an extra inning or using him after you have pushed him the day before (5/21, 6/5).  The 10th inning blow up on 4/27 probably was not a day they wanted to use him but were forced to due to length of the game.  quick hook when you push him may make sense.

What about Runners on when he came in that he gave up a hit to allow score.

I think we found a former Nat we can try to bring back.

Give me Stammen and Clippard back if the Padres and/or Indians are sellers.

Padres Pitching,  Sunday June 8, 2019
Pitchers                       IP   H   ER    K   PC-ST   ERA
C. Stammen (L, 4-3)   0.2   5    4     1   23-17   4.28
        :hysterical:
Nationals 8th Kendrick homered to left (421 feet).   2   1
Nationals 8th Turner homered to center (425 feet).   3   1
Nationals 8th Eaton homered to center (402 feet).   4   1
Nationals 8th Rendon homered to right (391 feet).   5   1

And yet, even after giving up 4 homers, he'd have the third-best ERA of anyone in the Nats' bullpen who has made more than 5 appearances for the team.

Would definitely take Stammen back. Him or Yates would be great.

Stammen is a free agent at the end of the year.

Not sure I see the point in spending prospects on a lost season.

The Padres aren't sellers at this point.  3.5 out of the Wild Card.  That could change.

somehow a 1.5 WHIP in AAA doesn't scream out call him up just yet.

The high walk rate doesn't bother me if he has the strikeout rate.

I'm not in awe of a <2:1 K:BB rate.  Not quite "Klej" MacDougall, but close.

that whole math stuff.  :couch:

I looked at the hits allowed. So, more Ks than BB + hits.  That's not bad.  4 IP isn't much evidence.  Give him 6 more appearances, or a serious injury to the current pen.

His walk rate has always been high.

I agree but I'm also hoping we can fix him like we did with Holland.

I’m rooting for Koda, but his future doesn’t look promising.
