Safe to say Williams will be sent back down tomorrow.
Safe to say Williams will be sent back down tomorrow. Who is up next?
I just dont think it's as easy to build a pen as everyone wants to believe it is. By and large, relievers have a notoriously short shelf life.
Teams once carried maybe three relief pitchers. A closer, a long man, and a "mop up" man. The "plan" and expectation was that starters would go at least 8 innings (9 for a guy like Scherzer, and a guy paid like Stras). Pitchers are bigger and stronger, better fed and conditioned, have far better travel conditions, etc. than ever these days. So ... instead, we're left with having to depend on the undependable.
Pitchers that threw 90 used be flamethrowers.

Yeah... this article didn't age well.https://www.mlb.com/news/baseball-s-top-10-bullpens-going-into-20195) NationalsSean Doolittle, Kyle Barraclough and Trevor Rosenthal give the Nats three experienced closing arms in the back of their 'pen. Rosenthal will be a major X-factor this season, after missing all of 2018 following Tommy John surgery. He had some command issues in camp, but his stuff has looked sharp. The Nats recently made another solid addition in Tony Sipp, a lefty who can be used as a southpaw specialist but who actually has fairly neutral platoon splits in his career.
Didn't love going to Barraclough for one out before Doolittle (now he's out for tomorrow I would assume). Would have rather rolled the dice for at least another batter but oh well. Williams was pathetic.
Davey to Barraclough: C'mon man. This is the Nats bullpen. You can't come in here and easily retire the first man you face. That's just too good and I won't stand for it. Do you think i would let you face another batter after a result like that?? Now get off my mound!
We've recalled Austin Adams from Triple-A Fresno and placed right-handed pitcher Austen Williams on the 10-day Injured List with a sprained right AC joint on Friday (retroactive to April 18).All we need now is an Austin Healey...
Waiting for the headline, "Austin Powers thru Marlins."
All right. Another pitcher that can get an >infinite ERA
