We went to the JMU vs Weber St. game tonight.  A balmy 29 degrees but no wind so it wasn't bad.  JMU won 30-14 and so they now head to Frisco Texas to play North Dakota State for the second time in three years in the national title game.  The game is on January 11 and will be on ABC.

The play of the game occurred just before half time.  Weber scored to make it 17-7 with less than a minute left but JMU ran the ensuing kickoff back to the Weber 35, and then moved it to the 15.  After a couple of penalties including a crazy delay of game, JMU got pushed back and attempted a 51 yard field goal as time expired. The JMU kicker missed badly, coming up about 15 yards short on the kick, but the kick didn't count as Weber's coach had called a timeout just before the play began in an attempt to ice the kicker.  Having seen that the kick failed by a wide margin, and with only 4 seconds left on the clock, JMU called a pass play and scored a touchdown with a pass into the end zone.  So what should have been a 17-7 game at half was instead a 24-7 game.

JMU went up 30-7 before Weber scored a touchdown with around 4 minutes left and then failed to convert the onside kick.  Earlier, Weber tried around a 40 yard kick, down 30-7 in the fourth, for reasons I can't figure out.  It got blocked.

I can’t believe the FCS players play all these games. They must not study as hard as the FBS players.

yeah, 16 game season for JMU and NDSU.  JMU's QB and a couple of other of their top players graduated last week.

The end of the 1st half was something else.  Up 17-0 and looking to cruise to an easy cover of the 1st half line of -10 (so I'm told - I wouldn't know about such things).  All of a sudden an easy cover becomes a bad push becomes a surprisingly nice cover.

Better description of the end of the first half:

James Madison: The Dukes took the momentum into the locker room after a bizarre sequence to end the first half. First, James Madison passed on a 46-yard field goal try on fourth-and-3 from the 29 and DiNucci hit Polk for 15 yards. The Dukes then spiked the ball to stop the clock with 32 seconds left, got a delay of game penalty, then a holding call, then an incomplete pass, another delay of game and another incomplete pass, giving them a fourth-and-30 from the 34. Ratke’s field goal try came up well short, but Weber State had called timeout before the kick, giving the Dukes another chance. This time, DiNucci hit Riley Stapleton in the end zone to make it 24-7.

Was reading a bit about Lawrence earlier.  Scouts say he’s a more athletic, stronger armed, Peyton Manning.

How tough must it have been for LSU’s OC to call the game hours after finding out his daughter in law was killed in a crash? She used to do some on field stuff with our AA team here in Pensacola, so so sad :(

The OSU-Clemson game has been almost unwatchable. Both teams look terrible.

Seriously? After the LSU/OK snoozefest I’m enjoying this game.

I missed that one but this seems to have been dominated by bad penalties and passes.

Second half has been better.

Dabo gets on my last nerve but he is apparently a great coach, is this 4 years in a row his team is in the championship game?

Dabo is the worst. So insufferable.

OSU choked it away last night.

At what point do we stop pretending college football is a national sport? It’s basically the Deep South and Ohio at this point; the networks bidding for this have to be considering paying recruits to go to notredame or USC themselves

Can't buy this logic.  What about Michigan, Penn State, West Virginia, Nebraska ?  It has more to do with where do the new high school stars live and whether they want to go to college nearby or a special school in particular.  Michael Vick was a good example.

Well, JMU and NDSU are the Alabama and Clemson of the FCS. :)

Notre Dame did make the playoffs last year, and Washington in 2016, but yeah, beyond that Clemson, Alabama, Oklahoma, and Georgia seem to dominate year after year.

The playoffs are structured to make sure a couple of teams outside of the south have to make it. 30-3 isn’t exactly an argument that they belonged

Agreed.  Kudos to Clemson for accepting gifts, but 0-3 or 4 in the red zone was pathetic, and the roughing the punter, PIs, etc... were deserved but awful.  If composure, both in avoiding mistakes and taking advantage of them, is part of being a champion, then the right team advanced even if you think that OSU was more dominant when it wasn't killing itself.
