Too bad it wasn't someone in the organization.

The more I think about this the more I lean towards believing that someone had to suspect something was going on there. He had been doing this for over two years

I have no doubt.    There's a player, etc. kickin' themselves in the ass hopin' the trail doesn't lead back to them.     Wonder if he used the Pirates' e-mail account.    No matter what account he used, there are Buccos who wish they weren't on his "contact" list.

I never got the draw of Woody Allen's work either.

I’ve heard so many people say this. I wonder if anyone actually likes his movies or just think they ought to in polite company.

Do you guys think it’s impossible to keep this a secret. People keep a whole lot of shady stuff from their bosses.
I would think it might not be difficult to keep a mostly internet relationship from the team?

Agreed completely, I highly doubt teammates were like "what'd the 13 year old send you now?"  but then continues to amaze me how many men apparently think this is just fine so who knows.

Annie Hall and Sleeper.  Radio Days had a few moments.  Also liked The Mighty Aphrodite.

I don't believe the bosses knew but I do believe somebody in the organization had suspicions.    Could be a player or somebody in the clubhouse but when they're in that kind of proximity for 6 months, somebody saw/heard something that possibly lookin' back was a signal.

You'd be surprised at what a work mate might say/insinuate particularly in a male (mostly) environment.

Seems like Nats really, really dodged a bullet when Desmond turned them down.

we offered him a 7 year deal that would have extended him through the end of the 2022 season.  Geez could you imagine that albatross right now?

This team has been incredibly lucky.  The long-term deals we signed (Zimmerman, Scherzer, Werth) have worked out well, while the ones that the players declined (Desmond, JZ, Harper) would have crippled this franchise.

recall he had some success with Texas I think right after he left here. That got him his Rockies contract. How long was the Nats deal he turned down?

7/107 which would have bought out two arbitration years.

Zimmermann was my favorite pitcher, and that has been one that has been about as bad as it gets....

I think it's more than luck. I think Rizzo and the FO know how to make underwhelming offers to players they don't really want to keep.

I mean, their default mode is underwhelming offers, so... :)

Sadly that’s probably just to check a box.

Do they have the Rooney Rule in baseball?

Yeah. The Selig Rule implemented in 1999 requires teams to hire at least one minority for coaching or front office vacancies.

The so-called “Selig Rule,” established in a memo to the clubs by Selig on April 14, 1999, requires teams to consider, but not necessarily interview, minority candidates “for all general manager, assistant general manager, field manager, director of player development and director of scouting positions.”

...clubs are permitted to promote internal candidates without considering outside options as long as they communicate their plans to MLB.

Thanks. I’d seen different descriptions online.
