Leon cleared waivers . Can either accept assignment to pawsox or lose his $2.5mm guarantee.
took his assignment and keeping the money. This is a good outcome for Boston, especially if it gets the pay out of the luxury tax calculation.

For as poorly as Sox pitching is doing perhaps Sandy may make it back to the big squad?

That's too bad.  Does anyone think this could be the end of a career ?

That may happen, but I think they try to run a while with Swihart as Vasquez's backup.  No question they messed up Swihart's development (would have loved that Benintendi and Swihart for Harper deal I tossed out in 2016-17 offseason fro both teams), so they are giving him a fair shot.  He's at the age when Varitek became the #1 guy, so a bit of late blooming by a busted prospect would be nice.  They say that Leon in Pawtucket might be good for pitcher development.

I see Keith Law wrote for ESPN today that Giolito is "healthy and has his velocity back." Picks him as a "breakout candidate" for 2019.

Got chased with 5 ER's thru 4.1 today...

Red Sox dfa Swihart and call up Sandy, seems a bit of desperation as they try to get Sale right.

PhilWood speculated that Gio Gonzalez will exercise his right to become a free agent today, and leave the Yankees' minor league team, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders.

Zimmermann pitching on mlb network v. Porcello in Fenway. Looks like a high scoring game. 3-3 2 outs bottom 3d 2 on.

listening to O'Brien and  Eckersley, they talked a lot about how JZ's first 3 starts with the Tigers after he signed were terrific, then he was hurt and hit the DL, and never was quite right after that.

Detroit announced he's heading to the IL with a UCL sprain, no word on if he'll need a second TJ yet but that seems likely.  Really sucks for him, but at least he got paid.

Supposedly no TJ for now, but it seems like more a matter of time than anything else.  He's gotten over 1400 major league innings out of the reconstructed elbow, which is actually top-10 all-time for post-TJ innings count (and second among active pitchers to Anibal Sanchez).  FWIW, Strasburg is at about 1200.

That sounds like, what could be, bad news all the way around.

I always liked JZ.  I was at the no-hitter and saw him last year make a good start in Oakland that had shades of his early career.  Sad to see him struggle for so long, but like another poster said - good that he got paid.
