Former Nats reliever Micah Bowie suffered severe lung issues after surgery to relieve pain arising from baseball injuries. Has been denied benefits by players union. He requires extensive medical care just to keep breathing, and it’s bankrupting his family. Very sad story.

Can't get in without taking down Adblock  ....   Question:   Does the article give a reason for the denial?

But Bowie had something else to remember his major league career — severe back pain. “The pitching had really taken its toll on my lumbar,” he said. “Once I got done with baseball, and the pain became unbearable and unmanageable, we had a spinal cord stimulator put in in August 2016 to help with the pain and to try to get me ready for some fusions that were necessary because of baseball. Not long after we had some complications from the surgery the battery bounced around, created some damage. I ended up with both lungs being damaged and my diaphragm being ruptured. I’ve had multiple surgeries to try to correct that damage.”
He can't sue for malpractice because Texas caps awards and he says the cost of bringing a case would be more than the award.  He is 20 days short of qualifying for an MLB pension, but filed an appeal because he claims his back injuries from baseball kept him from attaining the minimum service time.  His appeal was denied by the MLB pension program, and he claims he was told by a member of the appeal board that they blew off his appeal without reading it because their attorney said they could.  To be fair, that is how he is characterizing it.  The amount of money is $5K a month, which he says would keep him out of bankruptcy.

Best wishes to the great Frank Robinson, who is ailing. Robinson, 83, is the only man to win MVP in both leagues and was the first black manager. When he retired he ranked 4th alltime with 586 HR. He managed into his 70s and currently works as an adviser to Commissioner Manfred.

Rizzo has done a great job for the Nats and Doolittle has been a good closer but boy did Rizzo get taken in the Blake Treinen trade. Treinen had the lowest ERA for any pitcher who pitched more than 80 innings in the history of the game in 2018. Another player the Nats gave up in that trade was jesus Luzardo. He is the top A's prospect and at 20 years old is projected as a top of the rotation starter.

I don’t mind giving up Treinen. He needed a change of scenery. Luzardo hurts. There is still time to not make it a complete fleecing if, day, Doolittle closes out a World Series clinching game, but it’s not looking good.

Treinen sucked here and was never going to be good here. Some players just thrive elsewhere.

Indians DFA A.J. Cole. making that his second DFA this off-season.  Indians traded for Nick Wittgren and needed to clear a roster spot.

It’s like that way with many people, after they’re fired they change their ways. Some figure it out while others are perpetually lost.

I don't remember Treinen being so bad in DC.  He may not have been consistent, but some nights he was really sharp
