the people most outraged about steroids are OWG hall of fame voters who despite hating steroids still collect paychecks writing about baseball and probably attend more games as fan than most.
I buy what Sheinin was saying that the new electorate for the HoF is no longer dominated by the OWG. This class, with a reliever getting in unanimously and with Edgar and Mussina rising from their original vote totals, show the decline of the non-sabr voters. Moose's case is based on era and division adjustments to his ERA, Edgar was a DH. Both were sub-40, maybe sub 30 in their first year vote. Schilling topped 60%, Bonds and Clemens are near 60%, and Walker got a big bump.
Schilling will continue to be an interesting case because his vote is mostly a SABR vote - K:BB ratio, ERA, but very few wins. His post seasons will help with old timers, but otherwise, he's counting on SABR credentials. Will the statheads hold his mouth against him? I hope not. At worst, he's a jerk, and jerkiness is not a basis for keeping a guy out of the hall unless you want to expel quite a few.
