Free agent second baseman Brian Dozier is in agreement with the Washington Nationals on a one-year, $9 million deal, league sources tell ESPN.

Per Jeff Passan.

Looks like Passan gets more insider info now that he switched to ESPN

Great signing. One-year placeholder for Carter Kieboom. Also better than Difo. Also Howie Kendrick is old.

35 versus Dozier's 31 years.  But 35 is getting old in post-juice baseball.

a durable and reliably good power bat with real all-star potential for 1/9MM seems like an absolute steal to me

I agree. Last year he was bad. 3 previous years good to great. I’ll take those chances.

That's the last of the cap space.

Perfect signing. If he can 70% of what he was on the Twins it'll be a good deal.

@dougherty_jesse
Source: $2 million of Brian Dozier's one-year, $9 million deal will be deferred by the Nationals. That would not help the team stay under the competitive balance tax for this year, but it does mean the Nats spend a bit less money in the moment

naturally

Guessing we've seen the last of Howie Kendrick unless they decide to option Difo back to Syracuse Fresno

Good enough. Not so much that if he sucks, we can't bench him and call up Keiboom. Looks like about 5 million left before the threshold.

It's going to take some creative contracting now to sign Harper.

After estimated arb numbers and bonus money there is nothing left.

They were always going to go over the tax if they wanted Harper. 7 million more isnt going to matter.

If they want him, The Lerners will pay for Harper and suffer all the consequences of him without care. The Lerner family chuckles to themselves when luxury tax penalties are threatened.

Any paper losses can be written off against profits from other businesses. As real estate developers they have the advantage of many tax breaks.

Yes, indeed. They also employ a litigation strategy that envelopes their opponents in endless, and enormously expensive corporate litigation. They crush their competitors under their thumbs... in real estate as well as in the court room. An MLB penalty for purchasing a shiny toy like Bryce Harper is just a casual laugh to them.

Doubt either one is the case.  Difo won't be optioned because he and Turner are the only 2 guys who can play SS, plus he's the only LH bench bat on days Adams plays.   Kendrick stays because he'll be the only RH bench bat besides whichever catcher is sitting who can actually hit.  They now have enough relievers with options to play shuttle with the last couple bullpen spots rather than carrying 8 relievers: Doolittle, Rosenthal, Solis, Grace and Miller would be the only ones who couldn't be optioned, and a couple of those could probably get through being DFAed.

Our defense looks very much improved over last year.   There's going to be a lot less spots for a ball to land with this starting lineup vs one that had Murphy at 2b and Harper at CF.

If only it were a shuttle and not a cross country flight.
