Don’t have my glasses on, so I couldn’t read the small type to see if it gave a cause.

Edited to add: Seems he was battling dementia. http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/26832836/bill-buckner-dies-69-battling-dementia

Be a lot of mixed emotions with that news. Sadly.
not really. Red Sox fans made their peace a long time ago, even before 2004. If folks blame anyone, it's the gagging manager for not subbing him out defensively like he did most of the playoffs

I read somewhere that he had to move because of the haranguing. I thought not that long ago.

The ESPN article I linked further up the thread confirms that—says he moved to Idaho because of all the abuse.

read the article. It was in the 90s. They mentioned the 2 minute standing O he got in 2008.

And in the end he blamed the media, not the fans. Smart guy. ;) 22 years playing and he was a rock star. When the Senators moved I dropped out of baseball so I’m completely unaware of play from the 70’s on and the players along the way like Buckner and what he accomplished other than that infamous play.

yes, Dan Shaugnessy is an a$$. He literally coined the curse of the Bambino after 1986.  I have this thing I call my Shaunessy-Wilbon list of sports writers I will not read because they are jackasses. This was just one example why

When I'm perusing the media on the internet I'll peek into the Globe website. His name has been there forever it seems.  I always like reading Mike Barnicle before he got caught plagarizing and jumped to MSNBC.  My sister married a Bostonian and they were down that infamous fall weekend.

The cable company in Fairfax prior to Cox was called Media General.  They were a smallish media empire out of Richmond with cable and newspapers.  But they had a channel on cable that was a 4 way split of channels 4, 5, 7, and 9. So my brother in law and I could each watch our team play that Sunday. Me with the Redskins and him seeing his Sox in the Series. I believe that play took place while we were watching in that arrangement. I remember hearing a lot of groans. :mg: Looking back I should have switched to the channel with the series and let him watch it unfettered without any other distractions being as how it was the series and all especially since this was the era of the 19 inch TV.

Of all the players to debut since 1969, the only person to have a lower strikeout rate than Buckner was Tony Gwynn. In 10,037 plate appearance he struck out 453 times (Gwynn stuck out 434 times in 10,232 PA).

For Comparison:
Bryce Harper has struck out twice as many times (907) in 40 percent of the plate appearances.
Joey Gallo has struck out almost 100 more times (546) in less than 1500 plate appearances.
Chris Davis has stuck out almost as many time (444) since the start of the 2017 season.

Bill Yost of remember the Titans fame.

It's still hard for me to imagine Alexandria schools being segregated well into the 1960s.    When I had a job, I shared an online post of an old HS yearbook with an African American guy who worked with me.    He was from Southern MD.    He was shocked that I went to school with African Americans in the 50s and 60s.     I was shocked that he hadn't gone to school with white kids until busing.

You see his piece in the Globe today in which he derides the media for going after Buckner for that one play?

like I said, he's on my Shaughnessy-Wilbon list, so no. I'd be curious what he's written about Buckner from 1986 to 2000.

By the way, Boswell dug out a piece he wrote before Game 6 saying that McNamara was making a mistake leaving Buckner in the field so much.  He said that Don Baylor (Sox DH) should be at 1st rather than Buckner if he wanted to keep a bat in the line up.

We're going to bury my dad in Arlington early this afternoon.  A pic of then Capt. Ed on a pedicab in Saigon sometime in 1964.

Thanks!  I went and bought a Trump red tie over the weekend to go along with my MAGA hat to send my dad off with a smile and a nod. ;)

Thanks MG.  You're right in that it was quite moving.  He got the full treatment - caisson, honor guard, band, and 21 gun salute.  Those guys were out there in blue woolen unis in the 90 degree heat standing at attention.  He's in section 57 with a view of the Custis-Lee mansion, Pentagon, Washington monument, and Rosslyn (oh well, ;) ).  My mom and all my sibs were quite proud and very pleased with everything that was done for us. After 20 years in the Army and 20 years with the NSA, he deserved every bit of the special treatment.
