We used to call my aunt, Doris.    We thought she looked just like Doris Day.

Alice Rivlin and Anthony Williams did a lot of the heavy lifting keeping the city afloat.

Alice Rivlin is basically a goddess for government budget geeks. CBO head. OMB director. Federal Reserve Bank. Holy moly.

She was also Assistant HHS Secretary for Planning and Eval  back in the 60s. Don’t think there were many women at that high a level in those days.

Edit: back then it was Health, Education and Welfare.

I took that post down.    Sounded like I was challengin' you and that wasn't my intent.     Not sure why but Califano sticks in my mind.   BTW   ...   I pre-date HEW.    :)

OT   One of the things I dislike about social media is the tendency for people to "attack" (usually anonymously) any point another may post.    I try to stay away from any semblance of that, unless it's VaRK or Natsinpwc.     :)      It makes me break out.

Pre-Date HEW would mean something before 1965.  Were you referring to your fed employment .... or maybe your birth ?

I meant my birth.    :old:        Though I was working part time in '65, it wasn't as a Fed.    I wasn't drafted til later.

I think Carter broke off E from HEW and made the rest HHS.  I forget the timing, but this was supposedly to reward the NEA, one of his early backers.  I forget whether he also created DOEnergy.  Jim Schlesinger.

You are correct. Looked it up. Education was established October 1979.

I think the EPA was also spun off from HEW

no. There was a Nixon EO, something called executive reorg #3, which is not to be confused with either Funk #49 or Mambo #5. It took a little bit from several departments, including some radiation authority from the AEC and some water authority from the army corps. Air quality programs may have been HEW.

I. M. Pei

I.M. Pei, an American modernist architect regarded as one of the world’s leading designers of civic centers and cultural institutions, including the National Gallery of Art’s East Building, the glass pyramid at the entrance to the Louvre in Paris and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, died May 16 at a hospital in Manhattan.     He was 102.

Also the JFK Library and Museum, which you see coming  into Logan when the plane approaches from the southwest (along the south shore).  I think he also did the new wing Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.

Here's another Boston Landmark:

Despite ensuing successes, setbacks on the John Hancock Tower commission in Boston (1967 to 1976) almost sank Mr. Pei’s firm.
