Well crap. I saw this guy play in the mid-90s in Mutare, Zim...it was during a stage in my life when I was almost completely incapable of enjoying music that wasn't fast, loud and aggressive, and yet his rhythms had this white boy out dancing like a fool. RIP.

At least he had a pretty decent run (made it past the 27 club at any rate).

Just heard that on the news.    Very good artist and too young.

Lyndon LaRouche, 96.  Back in the day he stood out as a paranoid lying conspiracy theory spewing hack.  Apparently he was before his time.

Didn't he run for president from prison once? I remember that vaguely as a kid.

He hung around in Loudoun CO.   IIRC he bought some sort of military gear for the local sheriff.

I remember talking to the LaRouchies in college.  They used to hang out outside the bookstore (Co-op) with the classic provocative sign to suck you in. They hand out their paper back then.  LL was in the process of switching from a left-wing nut to the right-wing nut during that period.  US Labor Party, I think was the name.  Queen of England outlasted the SOB, who claimed she was behind an international opium conspiracy and backed by Lazard Freres.  More or less, anti-Semitic tropes tossed at the Brits at the time.  The hitler stache on Obama set me off once.  The weird thing is, he hit on a couple of positions that actually could be argued, like wanting to bring back Glass-Steagle in his later years.

Very involved conspiracies involving the Queen of England and others. So weird.

He really had it in for Henry Kissinger, which is pretty fricking bizarre.  I guess he wasn't all that keen on other such ideological bedfellows like Ariel Sharon.

Going from the banal to the sublime, RIP Opportunity:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/science/2019/02/13/opportunity-nasas-record-setting-mars-rover-is-declared-dead-after-years/?utm_term=.2c5369981380

Looks like the Mars Rover though may be in service longer than Airbus was making their big ol' a380.

Quote
PARIS (Reuters) - Airbus is nearing a decision to ax production of the world’s largest airliner amid a downward revision in demand from the Gulf and is likely to give an update with its full-year earnings on Feb. 14, industry sources and analysts said.

That's an astonishingly short lived plane in an industry that generally sees its major products last decades.

I've watched that monster comin' into Dulles.    I'm not sure why any one would want to fly on it.   Nice idea but it'd take a week to deplane.

Hope the mods don't get mad, we don't have a "death of famous airplanes" thread.

But what, a 12 year run for the a380?  Industry has changed, smaller planes are a lot more versatile.

They produced a new Spruce Goose at the same time that Boeing produced a long-range two engine jet that has a capacity better suited to point-to-point travel and sips fuel.
The same thing happened in the '90s with the A340 and 777.  Boeing took a bath on the 747-800, so it's not all on Airbus.

In an odd coincidence, that paper is written and published in the offices directly below mine in a strip mall in Leesburg. They've got four units all side by side with zero internal doors, so they go out a door and down to the next, glare around suspiciously at anyone outside, enter the code on the lock, and scuttle in. Then repeat the process four minutes later. They do have one woman who works there who is super friendly and nice; the rest? Look like they took lemon suppositories in the last five minutes, all day, every day.
