No substantive post here, just starting the new thread for 2019 while I can still quote the post with the links to the prior years because that's easier than re-creating the links.

Heh. Our 13-year-old niece tried fried calamari last Thursday and liked it—until either her mom or my wife told her she was eating squid, at which point she wouldn't eat any more of it.

13 year old girls are the most indecisive demographic on the planet.

She liked it before, she'll have it again, trust me.  :mg:

In her case, who knows. She has all sorts of idiosyncrasies, such as refusing to eat the crust on any kind of bread, even a soft crust—instead, she'll hold the bread in one hand and dig out the soft inside part with her other hand and eat just that. She doesn't know, and refuses to learn, how to use a knife and fork properly.

Yeah, you know, I don't get things like not knowing how to use a knife and fork, or refusing to put your napkin in your lap when eating at a restaurant, or the like. When I was 13, if you acted immature like that the other kids would make fun of you. My impression, both from these relatives and what I see in restaurants, is that many kids today (certainly not all kids, but many) try to remain as immature as possible for as long as possible.

It seems to me that if you're in your teens (heck, if you're six years old) your parents should not be cutting your food for you, unless perhaps you're having something new to you like lobster tail and you need to be shown how to get it out of the shell. I wonder what's going to happen when this generation of kids has to go to job interview lunches and the like. If I were making the hiring decision, I probably wouldn't hire someone I observed not knowing how to use a knife and fork because I'd think that person would be likely to embarrass the company in some way in the future.

Our relatives live in southern Florida, whereas we live in Fairfax County, so I won't be doing anything about it.

At 3 or 4 learning hot to use a fork and knife involves still developing motor skill and may be hindered by still limited vocabulary so struggling is understandable, at 13, there is nothing to learn- look at people who do it correctly, mimic their actions

Sure, and there's nothing wrong with some struggling—but it seems like nowadays parents don't want to see their kids struggle so they just cut the food for them, which in turn means the kids never learn.

I guess it's sort of like learning to ride a bike or to ski. You're going to fall sometimes. That's how you learn. If you don't struggle and make mistakes, you won't learn. (Or, to tie it back to "food and how you cook it," as my father once rather bluntly put it, "The only way to learn how to cook fish correctly is to freak it up a few times.")

Given the way the mods have treated a couple of other WNFFers over the years, you don't have anything to worry about

Already broke that rule after eating a steak at 8 p.m. last night. In my defense, I got home late after grocery shopping and really craved it.

A coworker gave me some venison that he shot so I'm making a nice venison stew this morning. Got it going in the crockpot with some potatos, carrots, onions, green beans, and a healthy pour of red wine. I went to Wegmans shortly after they opened this morning and got a freshly baked baguette so bring on the snow.  :az:
