I guess he had to eat and live indoors.     Lots of radio (media) folks re-invent themselves so they can stay employed.

Which is true of many workers these days. The era of retiring with a pension where you started are long gone, just as smooth jazz on the radio. ;)

For many years 99.5 was an "easy listening" station with the call letters WGAY. Fill in your own jokes about that. (I heard that station way too often as a kid because my mom listened to it.)

They had those call letters way before it was coopted by the alternative lifestyle crowd. It was in Silver Spring over by Giffords ice cream.

I thought WAVA was 105.1. I seem to recall at one point it was a rock station and then it switched to a Christian format (couldn't tell you the details because I didn't listen to that station).

In Arlington on George Mason and Lee Hwy. It used to be news talk then switched to rock and then christian. They used to have these 2 knuckleheads in the 80's (?) I forgot what happened with them.

That's what I remember - even as late as 2012, when we left the area

Before it became a jazz station, 105.9 used to be WCXR, a classic rock station (the first one I remember using the term "classic rock"). It replaced KIX-106, a country station. Edited to add: They started the classic rock format on 26 January 1986, two days before the Challenger accident, and became a "smooth jazz" station on 30 September 1994. The latter date was about nine months after 94.7 switched from being "lite rock, less talk" to a classic rock station.

100.3 used to be an oldies station.

106.7 was B-106 back in the 1980s. I recall it was a popular station, but I didn't listen to it. I do recall their bumper stickers that said "Playing the best new music first!" When they changed formats in 1986 or 1987, they did an all-Beatles weekend and then started using their full call letters, WBMW, before changing to WJFK.

For many years 99.5 was an "easy listening" station with the call letters WGAY. Fill in your own jokes about that. (I heard that station way too often as a kid because my mom listened to it.)

Have you ever seen Spyro Gyra or the Rippingtons perform ?  Rippingons were at the Birchmere & Blues Alley once a year and Spyro Gyra often played at Wolf Trap.  Great instrumentalist music not much different than rock groups with words.  Given this past week was jazz week in DC, I'm surprised they weren't around.  Marshall Keys, a local musical artist, played twice at Blues Alley and was great.

Smooth jazz radio stations have pretty much gone the way of the dodo bird.

Nope but I used to listen to them on 105.9 when it was WJZE and later as WJZW.

The current WTOP-FM at 103.5 used to be WGMS, a classical station—I never listen to classical, but my father did. I was happy to see WTOP take over that frequency because their other FM station at 107.7 always seems to have really bad reception in the area around the Pentagon. I used to have to turn it to their AM station (1500) if I wanted to hear the traffic and weather anywhere near the Pentagon.

I think 105.1 is correct.    Good memory jog.   One of the wildest stations in the 70s was WGTB from Georgetown during the underground days.

Day-ym you're old.    :)     Good recall.    102.3 was the original WHFS before Kathy Hughes (IIRC) got the rights and turned into classic R & B.    I think that's when 'HFS moved its studios to Annapolis.       Do you remember when WHUR's spot on the dial was WTOP-FM  ....   oldies?     Old 94.7 was WASH-FM at one time.    Why I remember havin' luch with Marconi one day  ....   :old:      Was 105.9 WAVA all news way back when?

Cerphe was at WAVA for a while.

Thought I remembered him being there but had to confirm.    :old:

Some guy in Oxon Hill had a low power underground station for a couple of years in the early 70's.  Never knew when he'd be on air, kind of bizarre really.

GTB was a good station. 10 Watts I believe

Knofler doesn't get older. He gets better. This is a little heartbreaking looking back at the song. Means more with most of the tread worn off the tires.

Dire Straits strikes me like one of those baseball players who has a brilliant peak but a short career.  Mark is still great and all that, but that streak from 1978 to the Live Aid concert in '85 was just brilliant.  The whole plays like Clapton, sings like Dylan thing.

Daltrey really can't sing anymore. Very few can push the pipes the way he did and still sound right. I say the same about McCartney and the Boss. Haven't heard enough recent Jagger to say.

He’s ok for a guy in his 70s. :)
