I take it you don't like Tommy Dorsey either.

He’s fine but he’s pretty basic white people music.

Surfin' and came across WHUT Austin City Limits   ...   John Prine.     Though I'm not surprised, he hasn't aged well.    Then again, he's probably happy just to have aged at all.    He had bouts with cancer that messed him up a bit.

Cancer, heart disease. He barely looks like the same guy.

Sounds the same, though. :)

I was going to say I don’t think he could sound any worse.

Well, his strength is songwriting more than his voice, I guess. He's still instantly recognizable. Which is good enough for me.

I'm cold and I'm tired
And I can't stop coughin'
Long enough to tell you all the news

I'd like to tell ya
That I'd see ya more often
But often is a word I seldom use      :P

Also like "Dear Abby".     I think I met him at a radio station I PT'd at.

Mix 107.3 is going off the air this month, sold to a Christian Rock station.  I remember listening to Q107 way back in the day as a kid.

When I listened to 106.7, it was a "rock" station.    I don't think I ever listened to a smooth jazz station.     In fact, what is smooth jazz, Mathguy?

105.9 was a smooth jazz station.  As was 101.7.  Smooth Jazz is modern jazz, where electronic instruments and computer technology play a big role in music creation.  Spyro Gyra is an example of a smooth jazz group.

Smooth jazz radio stations have pretty much gone the way of the dodo bird.

Before it became a jazz station, 105.9 used to be WCXR, a classic rock station (the first one I remember using the term "classic rock"). It replaced KIX-106, a country station. Edited to add: They started the classic rock format on 26 January 1986, two days before the Challenger accident, and became a "smooth jazz" station on 30 September 1994. The latter date was about nine months after 94.7 switched from being "lite rock, less talk" to a classic rock station.

100.3 used to be an oldies station.

106.7 was B-106 back in the 1980s. I recall it was a popular station, but I didn't listen to it. I do recall their bumper stickers that said "Playing the best new music first!" When they changed formats in 1986 or 1987, they did an all-Beatles weekend and then started using their full call letters, WBMW, before changing to WJFK.

For many years 99.5 was an "easy listening" station with the call letters WGAY. Fill in your own jokes about that. (I heard that station way too often as a kid because my mom listened to it.)

I knew a guy from my progressive radio days who went to work for 105.9 (IIRC).    I never did get the connection.    I guess he had to eat and live indoors.     Lots of radio (media) folks re-invent themselves so they can stay employed.

Day-ym you're old.    :)     Good recall.    102.3 was the original WHFS before Kathy Hughes (IIRC) got the rights and turned into classic R & B.    I think that's when 'HFS moved its studios to Annapolis.       Do you remember when WHUR's spot on the dial was WTOP-FM  ....   oldies?     Old 94.7 was WASH-FM at one time.    Why I remember havin' luch with Marconi one day  ....   :old:      Was 105.9 WAVA all news way back when?

Daughter had a friend in elementary school.  Her father was the overnight DJ at one of the stations.  I thought that would be one of the coolest jobs to have.  Plus he used a "stage" name in his job.  So jealous.

I remember his "real" name but not his radio name.  It was something like Smith or Jones.  The Fredericksburg station I believe.

I thought WAVA was 105.1. I seem to recall at one point it was a rock station and then it switched to a Christian format (couldn't tell you the details because I didn't listen to that station).

The current WTOP-FM at 103.5 used to be WGMS, a classical station—I never listen to classical, but my father did. I was happy to see WTOP take over that frequency because their other FM station at 107.7 always seems to have really bad reception in the area around the Pentagon. I used to have to turn it to their AM station (1500) if I wanted to hear the traffic and weather anywhere near the Pentagon.
