2 years, 20 million
I mean, its 8 million per. For a 2 WAR player, that's not terrible. It's like giving Strasburg 175 million
Sure, if you assume that taking a 36-year-old middle infielder whose remaining value is power and defense, putting him in Petco for his age 37 and 38 seasons, and expecting 4 WAR over those seasons is a safe bet. (I think it's actually 8 million total - 4m per - which is a much better deal. I'm just skeptical he'll provide much value at all, but the plan might be to write it off after 1 year if the Padres prospects develop.)
4 million per is even better. You're basically paying for good defense and not striking out.
Michael Brantley to the Astros. 2 years $32 million. And I just read that Marlins said they would take Syndergaard for Realmuto straight up. And the Mets said no (as they should have).
heck of a pick up for the Astros. Brantley was a 3.6 WAR player last year, putting up .309 / .364 / .468 with 17 HRs and he just signed for $16 million a year.Harper ain't worth another $14 million or more a year.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2018/12/19/mlb-cuban-baseball-federation-reach-agreement-that-will-eliminate-need-players-defect/?utm_term=.c99dac6fb010Cubans will still have to establish residency in another country before seeking a work visa in the US. MLB clubs will pay the Cuban federation (or maybe the club?) when they sign someone. This is designed to cut back on the role of smugglers.
How does the mlb paying the Cuban federation work with the embargo?
that's a good question. According to the article, it's sort of a wink.
Under the new agreement, Cuban players can still elect to leave the island, establish residency elsewhere and join MLB, but they would be subject to a waiting period of as long as two years, and the MLB team that signs him would still have to pay a release fee to his former Cuban club.
I just read the articleThat seems like it works right up until a player doesn’t want to sit out two years and claims that the whole agreement is illegal because, we’ll it probably is
I think there will be quite a few more Cubans playing in the Mexican League shortly. I wouldn't expect dudes to just sit out completely.
good point. this may be a boon to Mexico.Livo's quoted in the article as saying this is a good thing, so anyone who criticizes it may end up with a junk punch. Seriously, the stuff Puig went through (also in the article) has to stop.
Passan says Andrew Miller to STL is almost done.
