The sharks are circling for the kill.

Got a kick out of the fact that Evans' lawyer is Mark Tuohey, whom I remember from the DCSEC when D.C. almost had the entire deal crater in 2006 over the lease. Small world

Personally, what I find most shocking about the whole Evans situation is that I thought the DC politics was all good government types.

What is a subtle way to show sarcasm?

It should be an option for people who don’t want taxation without representation on their license plates

After the arrest they did some on the street interviews. I remember one young guy saying “a man’s gotta do what a man’s gotta do”.

Councilmember David Grosso called for Evans to resign and cited the sports wagering bill as a likely example of corruption.

Quote
“Especially troubling is his rush to legalize sports wagering and to sole-source the contract to ensure his business partner’s client remains the incumbent vendor. The relationship between Councilmember Evans and Intralot’s lobbyist Bill Jarvis only reinforces my view that we should disapprove the proposed $215 million lottery and sports wagering contract, decouple the two issues, and open both to competition.

The Council has a final vote tomorrow so Fan Duel and Draft Kings are pushing for the NJ style open competition over Intralot being given a monopoly.

@FenitN: Mendelson said he backs Vince Gray’s emergency bill to shift future sports gambling revenues to kids and violence prevention and expects it to pass. That would mean the sole-source sports gambling contract is poised to pass

Mendelson, asked by Silverman if he tied committee reassignments to sports gambling votes, said he was "offended" and gave a long answer about the options for dissolving Evans' committee. But he didn't deny the connection

This vote was for mobile betting only, the teams plans to open sportsbooks were not at issue. Evans refused to recuse himself despite being under FBI investigation for dealing with the same lobbyist hired by Intralot, the majority of the Council backed him. Turns out that Intralot has deals with a number of local companies who have ties to fund raisers for a number of Council members. Intralot won 7-5.

So they’re giving the nats $3.6 million when the contract just requires retail or arts space? I’m guessing you could build something classed as arts space a hell of a lot cheaper than 3.6 million

Hard to get much more than a AA outfielder for just $3.6MM these days...

$3.6MM is nothing for a commercial building of those proportions in the District, especially if it includes design fees and furnishings / equipment.

None of that explains why the government should do anything other than satisfy their end of the contract in the cheapest way possible- the nats get all the revenue, so why do anything that they than what is required?

Yep, the city is getting off easy based on that interpretation of the contract. Although it does come off as extremely greedy for billionaire owners to take millions from the tax payers to build a casino.
