I see no reason to bring him back at anything over 19 million or year at this point.

I might stretch that a little, but I'm on the same page. $28M a year for three? Okay. But that's about it. I think we've already seen his ceiling. It's very good, but not great.

I'm ok with sticking to the original offer of $300M/10 years or something close. Not much more though. I'm also ok with less years. No way he signs for less than $30M/year.

I think his ceiling is 2015. If he can put up a few years close to that, I'm good with the contract.

I just think that's too much.

Lets get this clear: Harper signed here for more than a year means Rendon is gone. The ONLY reason the Lerners would sign Harper is marketability. People will buy Harper jerseys. The Nats will get primetime games. The Nats will command national attention. The Lerners will make up whatever he costs in luxury tax.

Rendon doesnt. Rendon will likely command close to what Machado gets (in terms of AAV). Anyone who thinks hes signing here for less than 15 million AAV is a fool. Rendon's bat is easily comparable to Machado's, of not better. Hes one one of the best Defenders at third in baseball. He's going to command a lot of money. But hes not marketable in the same way Harper is.

Honestly, Rendon is simply more valuable and a better deal. Theres no ego. No question of effort or teamwork. Rendon just likes to play baseball and comes in every day and performs.

I'm not sure I agree with your premise, but if it's right, then I don't want Harper signed.

It could very well be that the team sees Kieboom as the 3B of the future, rather than as a 2B.  And so they would rather hang on to Harper, let Rendon go, and plug in a new 2B each year until Garcia is ready in 2-3 years.

Rendon provides far more consistency than Harper.

There’s no indication he’s open to an extension

2015 might be an outlier, but it was great. Calling one of the best seasons in the past 50 years "very good" is a gross understatement.

Rendon was not sure whether his agent, Scott Boras, would meet with the Nationals to discuss a potential contract extension this offseason. Boras said at the Winter Meetings this week that those conversations usually come up when arbitration discussions take place in January.

"That's up to them," Rendon said. "That's why I hired them. I dropped out of school. That's why I got them. I can just focus on playing. They'll work out all the kinks. Whatever happens, happens."

Barry Svrluga is again writing on the Nats.  He seems to think signing Harper to a 10 year deal is a good choice for the Nats:

You actually pay taxes for every state you play in during the season.  I work with a sports agency and helping them with their tax returns is a big part of it.

How does that work with Canada?

I think these out of state taxes specifically apply to athletes.  Here's a blurb from wikipedia:
Quote
The modern "jock tax" originated in 1991, when California imposed the tax on the earnings of Chicago Bulls players who traveled to Los Angeles to play the Lakers in that year's NBA Finals. Illinois soon retaliated, imposing its own "jock tax" on out-of-state players[1]—although Illinois' tax is only imposed on athletes from states that impose jock taxes on Illinois-based players.[2] Other states followed suit; by 2014, the only U.S. jurisdictions with major professional teams without a jock tax were Florida, Texas, Washington state, and Washington, D.C.[1] (the three states do not impose personal income taxes, while the U.S. Congress specifically prohibits the District of Columbia from imposing its income tax on non-residents who work there).

I’ve heard just the opposite. They seem optimistic on Machado based on recent reports. Not Harper.

Personally I think Philly has to go beyond 35 a year to get him to bite.

Agreed. It would have to be an astronomical deal and that would be ok with me for them to get stuck with that.

Nightengale thinks the Phillies will offer 12/$350 to Harper.

Good luck with that one Philadelphia.
