7 million is sizable?

That's 14% of the remaining cap space. Plus he has an incentive package that could double his salary. 25-30% is sizable.

kyle barraclough and Rosenthal make up 8 of the 10 million that Kelley and Kintzler cost. Rizzo has an extra two million now.

A very sizable chunk of cap space just went to a reliever who has the same agent as Harper. He's gone.

7 million isn’t that much and that money was going to a reliever anyway. Why does it matter who his agent is?

Harper is gone. It's not going to be because we spent 8 million on two relievers. Itll be because he doesnt want to be in DC.

I think the Lerner's will match anything that's not crazy. And all things being equal (or close to equal) I think he will want to come back. I've been saying the chance are 50-50 he comes back and I have not changed my mind.

So what is crazy money? Anything over $30M per year. Maybe the Lerners will come come up with a creative contract like they did with Scherzer. Put me in the camp of those who want him back.

I'm kind of thinking that if we were going to keep Bryce, it would have been announced by now.  IIRC, the five day exclusive window ends Friday at midnight.

Maybe. But I always thought he was going to shop around. I was hoping they would have pulled a Stras and signed him early but that was just wishful thinking.

He put out some heavy hints that he wanted to stay here, I'm guessing it's the Nats that are ready to move on. IMHO It's starting to look like a Jordan Zimmermann / Ian Desmond situation in that we probably made him what we consider to be a reasonable offer, but we aren't going to break the bank to keep him.

You could be right but let's see what the market will bear and go from there. They may have given him a reasonable offer and he may have to come back and negotiate. Maybe wishful thinking on my part.

In Jordan Zimmermann's case, I don't think he ever wanted to stay. And in Desmond's case, he was just not playing well and they wanted to move on.

The Nats offered Ian a contract a little north of $100M. He thought he could do better on the free agent market and left.  I don't believe he got a single contract that came close to that dollar amount but he may have topped it with multiple contracts over those years.

Before the start of the 2014 season Desmond still had two years on his contract and turned down a 7 year 107 million dollar extension. In 2016 he turned down the Nats qualifying offer of 16 million. In 2016 he ended up signing for 8 million and getting moved to the outfield. In 2017 he signed a 5 year 70 million dollar contract averaging 14 million a year. Depending on how much he makes the year after the 5 year contract is up he probably will lose about 20 million over those 7 years. I think he'll be okay though.

I don't have the memory that you guys have but my recollection is what they offered him was below market value. What I read into that is they just don't think he was as good as he thought he was.

Anywhere but there.  Anywhere.  I'd rather he signed for the Mets or the Phillies than the Cardinals.
