Bryant should be mad at MLB for making the rules, not the Cubs for using them to their advantage.  And when you are later offered 200 hundred million...how can you be mad?  I'd say in the end things are working out just fine for ole blue eyes.

Except that the Cubs are the ones that took advantage of it. The Angels  gave Trout a massive deal before they had to.

Why should Bryant reward them?

So how come Bryce never “rewarded” the Nats by signing a long term deal?  Because he wants to test the market. Trout left lots of money on the table.

Yes. Then again, Trout is getting way more money than he would have. He was on a minimum deal. He doesnt see 35 million in arbitration.

Wouldn’t this have been his first year in a new contract as a free agent? I don’t think he made even half of that the last couple years. Bryce made over $20 million this year which I believe was more that Trout made last year.

His deal bought out three arbitration years and three years of free agency.

Yes. And the first three arbitration years were nowhere near $30 million. He would probably have made more those years had he not signed and gone through the arbitration. I believe he made about $40 million total for those first three years. Bryce made over $22 million this year alone.

Harper didnt go to arbitration either. Nats gave him a lot more money.

Trout got 45 million through his arbitration years . Harper made 39

Trout got about $40 million the first three years of his new contract. Those would have been the last three years of arbitration for him. 2015-17. Harper got $42 million for his last three arbitration years. I know he did not formally go to arbitration. But those are the comparable years. Trout will make $100 million for 2018-20. Can Harper match that?  Probably. And he is not the player Trout is. If Trout had gone to arbitration or negotiated separate short term contracts in 2015-27 he would have made $50
Million those years. He’s the best player in the game. Of course it gave him peace of mind knowing he would get the big pay days in 2018-20.

So? Not sure what your point is. The new contract went into effect in 2015.

https://amp.mlb.com/70385190-angels-sign-mike-trout-through-2020-for-1445-mllion.amp.html

It’s average of about $24 million per year over the six years.

Harper provides more buzz. Initially. Rendon provides a better chance at a championship.  Which results in buzz. Winning provides buzz. Losing, the buzz wears off.

Nailed it.

Harper is the sizzle.  Rendon is the meat.

They are going to make their push for Harper and see what happens, then figure Rendon out.  I don't think it's an either/or.  Zim comes off the books after this season for a 2 mill buyout.  That's 18 million free.  Rendon is already expensive in arbitration.  Projected at like 17.5 mill.

Zimm ain't going nowhere.

He'll be a Nat for life.  After his contract is up, if he can still play they'll sign him to a decent deal that doesn't embarrass him nor the team.  Which is fitting for the Face of the Franchise...

I'm thinking a series of 1 year, $5 mill deals.  Until he can't play anymore.

This would be insane. I'd take my chances with a Lind/Adams type every year over Zimm.

We are NOT picking up his 18 million dollar option for next year.  There is a 2 million buyout.  If he's going to keep playing, he's going to DH in the AL.

He's even said he knows the Nats are almost certainly not picking up that option. But he's still good when healthy. So rip up that contract and give him something like 28-30 million over the next 3 years. Then transition him to some type of front office role.

Livo came back and played his last year for 1M...at some point all the zeroes become an abstraction and lose any meaning.

I think we'll be very, very fortunate to get a healthy 100 games out of him this coming season.  Give him his 2 mill, honor him, and move on.  Why have another 3 years and 30 million holding your breath he can stay on the field as he gets even older and more broken down?  This is the perfect time to be walking away.  His legacy will be better anyway than him playing another 3 years and they resembling Werth's final year.

If he wants to take his 2 mill buyout and then sign a 1 year deal for a few mill, that would be ok.  I wouldn't commit more than a year at a time.  We need to find a permanent 1B for the long haul.  My idea is sign Harper and have him start playing 1B when Zim sits as the lefty compliment and keep Eaton.  5 guys rotating for 4 spots between the OF and 1B.

Nope.

He'll re-sign with the Nats for like $5 mill for a year.  Count on it.

Bryce's wikipedia entry now lists him as a free agent. I can't believe this day has finally come  :'(

Andy Martino of SNY.tv recently wrote: "As the Yankees wrapped their pro scouting meetings last week and determined a preliminary offseason strategy, a pursuit of free-agent outfielder Bryce Harper was not part of the plan, according to major league sources."

Not sure the Cubs can take on that contract as they need to extend Baez and Bryant.  Phillies seem like the front-runner (or us of course)

update: Yankees just reached a 1 year, $7.5 million deal with Brett Gardner

A very sizable chunk of cap space just went to a reliever who has the same agent as Harper. He's gone.

I still think this poll needs an "other than the Nats" option...

7 million is sizable?
