I imagine they will rework Zim’s contract to keep him an extra year or two and bring down the overal AAV number. Like 3 years 27 million (I’m making the number up). He gets to retire a Nat and get 9 million extra bucks and it cuts his AAV number in half next season. So the nats would save almost 2 million in luxury tax.
Steve, the main writer from the Talk Nats blog, has been proposing this for a while, something along the lines of two extra years for $3.5 each, which would save $8 million in cap space for 2019. I disagree, I think that we suffer through one more year of Zimmerman and be done with him, better to have a $17 million cap hit now than $8 million for the next three years. His bat is worth the money but he kills us in the field and he keeps getting hurt.
