The luxury tax threshold is is set years in advance in the CBA. The super 2 threshold is based on the top 22 percent of players between 2 and 3 years. It’s unknowable unless you can foresee what every team is doing with their guys.

I guess you could have held him out another month just to be sure I guess. But once you bring him up, the only way out is to send him to the minors.

well, his first year up, they called him up and he more or less did not play, right?  I think folks said it was dumb at the time.

2015 - 27 games, 44 PAs.  He was brought up to sit and occasionally pinch run in a year we were fading.

That's basically 20-25 million wrapped in two bullpen guys when you already have a closer locked in at 6 million per year for the next two seasons. That seems pretty stupid when you have a bunch of other holes on the team.

Astros are planning to extend the $17.9M qualifying offer to Dallas Keuchel. They are planning not to extend it to Marwin Gonzalez. No word yet on Charlie Morton, who may be a close call.

Sure, but that's an insanely high bar to hit.  His ERA in Atlanta was under 1.50.   Even since, he's under 2.50 - and for reference, Mariano Rivera's career ERA was 2.21.  Kimbrel presently sits at 1.91 all-in.
