Museum of Americans in Wartime Open House
« Topic Start: September 16, 2018, 09:46:02 PM »
Passing this along as I thought some of you may be interested in attending.  The Museum of Americans in Wartime, AKA "The Tank Farm" is having it's annual open house in Nokesville VA.  This started as a display of a person's collection of military vehicles, and has grown substantially since them.   We've attended many times and have always had a good time.  Kids especially like it.  They request that people register in advance so they have a rough estimate of number of attendees, but there's no cost to register and only a $10 per person donation is requested at the door.

I attended a few years ago.    If you're into military history, it's a relaxing/interesting way to spend a day.

yeah, it's pretty intense.  It's insane to think of someone carrying one in combat.

Even though the demonstration is in the middle of a demonstration field (safe distance), it feels toasty.

How stroller-friendly is this museum? My dad is in town and would love this kind of stuff, but I can't go anywhere without my 5 month old.

It’s a big open field with a few big shelters. Very easy to get around with a stroller.

imref is on target.    I found it to be minimally hilly/challenging but it is outdoors with few "improved" walkways for the most part.    There are gravel and dirt roads throughout the area.    Lots of shelter and plenty of displays to stop at.    Depending on the child's age, they may find it fun to climb on and use the displays.     Near the far end of the layout was a gravel area with a FDNY truck from 9/11.

EDIT:   Went back and looked at some of the pictures I took.    Some of the displays (limited) are indoors with cement floors.    There was an asphalt/small pebble area (pad) in the middle of the goings on where a small, maybe 15 piece WWII type band, was playing.     The majority of the displays are in grassy areas but they're so stomped down by the crowd that it's not much of a trudge.

I went to this (Saturday, Sep 22). They said that Sunday's open house is canceled because they expect awful weather.

It was even more rural and rustic than described in this thread. Almost everything was on just straight up grass, not even gravel roads, and you can forget about paved. That said, they had an impressive number of tanks and APCs, and almost every one was manned by historical reenactors in period uniform who were enthusiastic to talk about what unit they were portraying. Plenty of chances to be photographed holding historic guns too if you're into that.

I went with my dad, who is a defector from Communist Poland. His first job out of school in Poland was working in a factory that built tanks and self-propelled anti-aircraft systems, so he was happy to see that there were some Soviet vehicles too. There was actually a group that portrayed Polish WWII soldiers, who had come up all the way from South Carolina. When they met an actual Polish person, they got pretty excited.

My favorites, though, were the people who portrayed American soldiers from the liberation of Grenada. They had an authentic 1980's cassette player to show how soldiers of that era listened to music.

Given that it had rained overnight, it was also incredibly muddy. Especially anywhere that a tracked vehicle had operated, because they tear up the ground when they move over grass. It was actually a good, unintentional display of what it must have been like to be a German infantryman moving through the Russian steppes in WWII.

Interesting visual. That reminds me of the muddled streets of Stalingrad in the movie "Enemy of the Gates."

There was a German movie (aptly named "Stalingrad") that came out in '93 or so that really captures that.
