With their 3rd Round pick, 101st overall, the Washington Nationals selected right-hander Reid Schaller out of Vanderbilt. Schaller went undrafted out of high school after dealing with injury issues, and underwent Tommy John surgery that cost him his first year.

Schaller put up a 4.05 ERA, eight walks, 36 Ks, and a .290 BAA in 26 2⁄3 IP this season.

“He’s super intriguing,” Jim Callis said on the MLB.com broadcast of the Draft. “This is a guy who could have been drafted out of high school in Indiana a couple years ago. Low 90s with a fastball, but he had kind of a series of nagging injuries and he was committed to Vanderbilt, it’s hard to sign guys away from there especially if they don’t go super-high in the Draft.”

"Physical reliever who has had injury issues throughout college career but showed a pro-ready two-pitch mix in mid-90s FB and power SL this year for the 'Dores."

7/30 update via Federal Baseball:

Quote
Schaller, the Nationals third round pick, started in five games for the GCL Nationals. He went 0-1 with a 1.54 ERA in 11.2 innings pitched. Schaller managed to hold opponents to a .209 batting average, while racking up 16 strikeouts. Schaller was assigned to the Auburn Doubledays on July 30.

Seems like Schaller is starting to develop a bit.

Still walking too many people but over his last four starts he's been good: 19.1 IP, 22 Ks, 12 Hs, 8 BBs, and 6 ERs.

Anyone on the board seen him pitch?

Another good outing for Schaller last night: 6 IP, 6 K, 2 H, 2 BB, 0 ER.

Opponents hitting just .192 off him this year.

Schaller has been working in the back of Wilmington bullpen and the results have been decent. Still only 24, trying to have a healthy full season.

16 appearances, 20.2 IP 3.05 ERA 1.35 WHIP 23/10 K/BB with 4 saves.

Too many walks for high a but it also doesn’t really matter.  He’s a bullpen arm and they can debut when they’re 27, 28, or 29 for all I care
