Here's an interesting article about native Washingtonians. A little dated but still applies.

https://www.washingtonian.com/2014/08/14/less-than-half-of-washington-residents-are-actually-from-washington-census-data-shows/

I wonder how those numbers compare to other larger urban centers

Here is the source data they quoted from NY Times. It oly looks at state level Data, but it's absolutely fascinating. I could dive into this for a while.

And here is a breakdown of baseball fandom. If you mouse over the interactive maps, you'll notice that in many ZIP Codes in the DMV, the orioles aren't even the 2nd favorite team, it's the Yankees.

looks like the As and Mets are the two teams that are nowhere's favorites. It's nice to see red sox not Os third in my zip code

Pretty nifty map. It's insane how much of the country goes to the Yankees. I guess the football map would have large chunks of the map going to the Cowboys, though. I think in both cases it's generational fandom in areas without a team or with a terrible team gravitating toward the winners. And if your old man is a die hard Yankees fan, it's likely to pass to the kids.

You can spend weeks in much of LA or Miami without encountering anyone originally from there.

I'm not from here but I grew up here.    Not much difference between Wiz, Nats and Caps fans and other towns.   It's been a rough trip but most of the teams have solid bases.    Like anywhere else, the playoffs bring a lot of bandwagoners out.

More people from other places as compared to cities in the northeast and midwest.  I don't think it's probably much different though from the west coast teams and Florida in that respect.  It's also a very wealthy area with some of the highest income suburbs.  Which means people can better afford going to games.  No wonder Angelos was upset to lose it. ;)

I wish they would've just counted the DC suburbs instead of the whole states of VA and MD for a more accurate picture.

Even so, we'll probably see similar statistics for other rapidly growing metro areas like Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, Phoenix, etc. This link shows growth of the major metro areas from 2000-2010: http://www.iweblists.com/us/population/MetropolitanStatisticalAreaPop.html

Here are the statistics for 2017: https://www.statista.com/statistics/183600/population-of-metropolitan-areas-in-the-us/

Even if you cut the pop in half, it's still more than Tampa's 3.1M, Denver's 2.8M, St. Louis's 2.8M, Pittsburgh's 2.3M, and that doesn't account for those metro area's transient pop.

I think DC is just fine as a sports town, and it'll only get better as long as the teams are winning. 25 years ago, the Redskins were an elite franchise, the Patriots were a laughing stock, and the San Francisco Giants wanted to move to Tampa. Winning is everything.

DC is far too cosmopolitan to ever be a "good" sportstown.  The DC-ification of Northern Virginia has only made it worse.

It depends which circles you are talking about. Native Washingtonians tend to be African American and they would shudder at being called cosmopolitan. Native Northern Virginians (I grew up in Arlington) have seen the area change from a very southern area to a more Mid-Atlantic or Northeast type of suburb, which might be what your are referring to as DC-ification.

When I first got to DC, I was amazed at the number of, now old, white guys who grew up in SE/Anacostia.

Yep, many of those people moved to Northern Virginia in the '50s and '60s. They were kind of Southern like. And they all pronounced Washington with an R, as in "Warshington." ;)

Hey, be nice.    :)    Warshington is the correct pronunciation in W. PA as well.

guy who grew up in DC metro

- from a DC suburb or northwest
- went to private high school, likely WCAC or prep/stalbans/etc.
- works as a "consultant" (likely at booz allen)
- hangs out at the bullpen a lot
- overall pretty cool dude (this is not me, just my friends)

You described my son to a tee. I would include some well off suburban public schools (McLean, Langley, Oakton, Yorktown, etc. in NoVA). Some comparable schools in Montgomery County.

And suffers from a serious case of "bro."

My son just moved from Clarendon to Glover Park, but you get my drift.

I lived in the Clarendon area (Lyon Village) in the 80s.    I hardly recognized the place the last time I was there.

There's a biological cousin species that is 20 years older and still wears and listens to the same crap they did when they were 16.  I speak with some authority on this.

Anyone else getting robocall surveys about the Nats (and Bryce in particular)?
