Goalies don't go high in the draft because they haven't gotten the level of coaching the skaters do by the time they are draft eligible.  A guy who has played well at the NHL level and gotten years of coaching is certainly worth a #1, especially as well as he played for most of 2017-2018.  His 2018 playoff record of 0-1 will not deter that...

The top maybe 1-14 or even 1-22 picks in this years draft are pretty much locks.  Gruby could certainly command as high as a #23 pick this year...or, since the Isles have 2 first round picks, they may trade one for Gruby and some sweetener.  Chicago has the #8 and #27...and Crawford's return is far from certain.  The Isles could also look to move up from their #41 pick to a spot that would make it worthwhile to the Caps...maybe into one of the Rangers 2 first round picks, which are both after the cream of the crop has likely been taken.

There are countless ways the Caps could convert Gruby into a first round pick, though likely not in the top 2/3rds...

Then how much would the 23rd and 31st pick get us into the draft?

If I understand the question, 23rd and 31st picks presumably get you NHL career level talent...not stars, but solid pieces...which in the salary cap era, isn't really a bad thing.  A guy that could become a Lars Eller type perhaps...or on the flip side, he could turn into Marty Erat...  :D

I get the feeling the Caps are looking at maybe only one more year with Beagle...if that...so I see them looking at Centers...though they are gonna needs a top 4 D once Carly goes...may have to get that thru trade...

Shame that the Caps won't get a shot at Brady Tkachuk in the Draft...his favorite pre-game meal is chicken parm and pasta...

#1 overall pick is one of the best defensive prospects in a long time. apparently it's a pretty good draft, so a good year for us to try to get another first rounder.

anyone we pick is probably 2-3 years from playing up here unless they juan soto it :stir:

No real consensus...I gotta think Center or D.  If there is no elite Center left, and there shouldn't be unless we move up or pick up another #1 by trade, I'm guessing a D...just because good ones are so hard to find...

Some have suggested Wilde will be available at 31...I just don't know...be nice if he was...that would make it easy...

I happened to be surfin' FiOS earlier and the NHL Network was givin' a breakdown.    Man, he has some moves.

Yeah...Rasmus Dahlin...
I watched some of his play in the under 20 championships this year. He's good but it's not like he was dominating guys his age. Maybe just some off games.

I believe guys at the end of the first round tend to return to
Juniors or need some AHL time.

Whoops...missed that too...

What was our take?  #16 would be sweet, but I suspect not by unloading Orpik...

Clarification: Some random donk on AM sports talk in Toronto thinks GMBM can get a first rounder for Gruby.

I'm assuming that the Red Wins would be giving up the 30 pick if it were a first rounder. Other than that, I don't see anyone coughing that up for Gruby. Not after his performance in the playoffs.

47th pick .... yeah

Not exactly...

We got rid of Orpik in the process...that was worth moving down as it frees up $5MM+...

Grubauer alone would probably have been Werth a first round pick.  But respect for the elderly was shown.

This frees up enough cash to re-sign Carlson and Beagle?

Carlson is gonna be knockin' on close to another $5MM himself ($9MM total/yr)...all gonna depend on what some of our RFA's will want...Gruby was only making $600K, so not much excess to spread around there...
