The Marlins nowadays are nothing but a jumped-up farm club for the Yankees (on the model of Arnold Johnson's Kansas City A's of 1955-60) so while it may not necessarily be a matter of trying to lose, it is still a matter of a team not trying seriously to contend in its own right.
